2002 isuzu trooper mystery Sign In

I have a 2002 isuzu trooper with 111,000 miles on it that has a trans problem. When I would come to a stop then try to accelerate again it has no power . It could be driven like a manual trans and it worked. I took it to a trans shop and he told me I needed a new trans because there was metal shards in the pan, so we had it rebuilt. When he put the new one t and drove it, it is still doing the same thing. He has had our car for a month and still cannot fnd the problem. I really need any feedback I can get. ThanksUnsure

What did the metal shards come from. Please tell me that they flushed out the cooler.

Sounds electrical. Is there command to the shift solenoids from the PCM? Any transmission related codes being stored?

well he told me there were metal shards in the trans pan as far as where they came I guess its from the trans?I dont know if they flushed the cooler? I will ask him tomorrow. He told me when I took it in the first time that its not throwing any codes just the engine threw a code but it was something to do with smoging. and emitions code of some sort. Then he told me the new trans in not getting any power? so he thought maybe it was something to do with the computer?

Well, if there isn't power to the shift solenoids in the transmission, the transmission will be in default 4th gear which explains the loss of power on take off.

Power and ground to the solenoids in the transmission comes from the PCM. Shouldn't be to hard to find out the culprit using the wiring schematic. Do you know the trouble code numbers, just to be sure the PCM isn't inhibiting the transmission by turning off the solenoids?

ok so is there anything I should ask the mechanic? Besides the cooler flush, and pcm? He said he was going to try to get a used computer and try it to see if it fixes the problem but Im assuming it didnt beacuse he hasnt called.

ok I taked to my mechanic and he needs to fnd another pcm to test if thats the problem. I really dont want to buy one if it s not the problem. Is there anything else that it could be. Say we buy a new one and it doesnt work? anything else we should look for? thanks agin for the help

As long as the PCM is getting power and grounds to its circuits, there aren't any codes in there that might cause the transmission to inhibit the solenoids, and the wiring is good between the PCM and the solenoids, then it's highly possible the PCM is the culprit.

The PCM was replaced and now the Transmission is getting power. However it only starts in 1st then randomly goes through the other gears from what I understand. The mech said he tested the voltage and that it's all good. So the guy who rebuilt the trans, came by to pick up the car and take it to his garage. What does that sound like to you? mech 1 thought maybe wrong sized gasket but didn't tear it down as mech 2 was going to take it back. Any ideas?

Lets see what his rebuilder comes up with. Is this rebuilder some random guy that lowballs everyone in the area by a substantial amount or an established transmission shop? Its possible that an error or a dud part got put in during the overhaul. These things can happen and even mechanics are only human.

No it's a real shop, They are on ebay with good reviews and when I found out they were in LA I just called them directly. https://sites.google.com/...mission/contact-us-1
They appear to be just fine, I don't have any reason to believe otherwise at this time. I would have kept my biz more local, but there's no trans shops up here.
Does the issue sound mechanical to you?

Could be, I'm just trying to figure out why the other shop wanted a used PCM just to try it. A good knowledge of the system and testing some wiring would confirm a PCM error and most places won't deal with a used one unless they are shooting in the dark at it. If the rebuilder is reputable they will stand behind any error that may have occurred by their guys. I asked about them because I went the way of lowballers once on my own truck's trans. Got 5000 miles before the reverse blew up and I had a think ahead truck.

The thing with a used PCM, is that you don't know if the software is designed for what the vehicle is equipped with. You just can't take a PCM out of one of these newer cars and stick it in another and have everything hunky dory. Most of the time the PCM has to be reflashed with the correct current calibration and sometimes VIN for everything to function as it was intended.
