Our 2003 Alero can no longer be taken out on the highway, as it has begun to shudder when going downhill at higher speeds. Before we became aware of that, I also noticed an occasional clunking in the back of the car when braking at a stop sign, etc. Are the two conditions related? My husband thinks it's transmission-related, and we're wondering if taking it to a oil change place that also does inspections and minor transmission work will take care of the problem. It's a 6-cylinder engine, and has about 165,000 miles on it.

I couldn't tell you if it's transmission or brake related without driving it but I definitely would not advise you to bring a transmission problem to the oil change monkeys. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You wouldn't have put on the parking brake recently?.. are any of the wheels hot to the touch after driving, burning smell?

No, haven't used the parking brake in quite some time.
