2004 Honda Civic doesn't wanna go Sign In

I was going down the noticed my lights were dimming and my stereo was going on and off. Car lost like all the power. Opened my hood to find my alternator mounting bolt and adjustment bolt broke so we replaced both. Got the car running and it's like it doesn't want to go in like D, have to put in in like D3 to first start out. So we figured the transmission is slipping g so we replaced it and it's still doing the same thing. We then DE used to take it to a local auto zone and have it tested. We noticed the temperature gauge doesn't work and it doesn't realize when you put it in D, D2, D3 but does in Neutral, reverse, and park. They tried two different testers. The first one said it could not communicate with the vehicle, and the second one said error.

Good bet when the alternator bolt broke, the alternator lost its ground and fried parts of the PCM.

Honda Service News August 2004

TITLE:
Engine Won't Start? Check for Loose Alternator Bolts

APPLIES TO:
2001-04 Civic

SERVICE TIP:
Got a 2001-04 Civic in your shop with any or all of these symptoms?

- The engine cranks but it won't start.

- The MIL comes on.

- The immobilizer indicator blinks while the engine cranks.

- The HDS can't communicate with the ECM/PCM.

Check for loose alternator bolts. If these bolts are loose for any reason such as the alternator was R&R'ed or an accessory A/C was installed on a DX model at the dealership, the alternator can overcharge and fry the ECM/PCM.

If the alternator bolts are loose, tighten them, and try restarting the engine. If the engine still won't start, then check the ECM/PCM connector for battery voltage and ground. If you're reading battery voltage and ground at the connector, then replace the ECM/PCM. Keep in mind, though, any ECM/PCM damage that's caused by loose alternator bolts from A/C installation or body repair isn't covered by warranty.

That's what I was thinking. But the car does start. Before all this happened I could turn the key to start for like a second and it'd fire right up but now I have to hold it for like 5-10 seconds and it'll start but the engine like bounces and spits and sputters until it gets warmed up a little bit then it idles fine

Notice it says, "with any or all of these symptoms?"

Replaced the ECM and the problem is still there. Any other suggestions?

Are you still not able to communicate with the PCM using a code reader? The first thing you should have done was to see why your code readers were not able to communicate the PCM. That probably would have verified the TSB above if you isolated the communication failure to the PCM internals.

I believe if you were to replace the PCM on that vehicle is has to be programmed with the transponder key codes for the engine to start. Was that all done?

When you turn the ignition on does the check engine light come on?

Check fuse 9 (15 amp) in the under hood fuse block and make sure it is good. That fuse protects the power feed circuits for the data link connector and the gauge assembly. If it is good, check for power on the data link connector pin 16 (white/red wire). It should have battery voltage on there all the time.

Once you can get communications restored, maybe can see why the check engine light is on.
