Question on tranny fluid change:
3.0Ltr ford Taurus station wagon, 2004, automatic tranny.
folks,

Need to change tranny fluid, but not sure of the best way to do.
1. Should i drop tranny pan and change fluid / clean or replace filter?
Does this procedure drain the torque converter of it's fluid also? (Not sure
if all the fluid comes down out of torque converter when engine is turned off).

OR

2. i believe they have machine to "vacumn" tranny fluid out, up thru
dipstick tube - but this procedure does not do anything re: filter within
tranny. Does this procedure remove torque converter fluid also?

3. Also, if I need to use a new tranny pan gasket(if i drop pan for the change)
is it best to get a cork or rubber gasket(not sure if dealer will offer both) ?
Also, what is the best type of gasket sealer to use if, say, a cork gasket is bought.
do I seal both sides of the gasket with the gasket sealer( i have read the "black"
gasket sealer is best to use with cork).

thx,
crazycarz

I wouldn't use any of those methods as none will replace all of the fluid.

I would just pay a shop to use a total exchange machine. It just lets the car pump out the dirty oil itself while replacing it with new fluid on a 1 to 1 basis. It's the only way you get it all changed.

Dropping the pan will get less that 1/3.

Ditto - Definitely not the suck out the dipstick thing as that can only accomplish just changing as HT said about 1/3 of the fluid same as dropping the pan which could be better as you get to clean out the pan itself and look around and replace the filter which I would do if there anyway. Trouble is IMO if filter is really full of junk it's trouble anyway,

Yes, if it has anything at all clogging the filter, the the fluid change is futile and will probably make things worse. Most of them are just screens anyway.

I just do them if there for any reason vs just a gasket because I can't help it if right there and it comes with the gasket now in a flat package not all knotted up like some in a smaller box,
