2005 Jeep hard shifting Sign In

I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler, 4.0L I-6, 85k miles. Last year, the check engine light came on and my Jeep would repeatedly downshift hard into a lower gear at random times (the longer the trip, the more frequent the downshift became). It happens when I idle, when I accelerate faster than a turtle walks, when I brake, etc. I would have to turn off the engine in order to be able to get home from wherever I was and would need to repeatedly do this. When it shifts down, I can't get above 30 mph. We had the codes ran at AutoZone which came back with all my O2 sensors out. Long story short, a dealership did some fraudulent repairs. There is a new PCM (which is what one mechanic said) but the problem remained. Some time passed as did multiple mechanics. Back in late fall, I brought it to another dealership over an hour away having exhausted my options in my town. They had my car for over a month and determined first that it was a solenoid in the trans. That didn't fix the issue and then they told me it was some other part in the trans (I don't have my paperwork so I can't remember what was fixed) which was $1400. Five months later, I had to bring the Jeep back to the second dealership (for warranty) because of the same exact issue with the downshift. They had my vehicle for nearly two months and called me to tell me it was either the seals or some other part (something specific I can't remember at this time). We asked for an estimate on the second thing which they said would be between $500-1k to repair. They call me yesterday and are now telling me its the pistons and thrusters and that it will be between $500-1k for the diagnostic plus $4k to fix the trans (so no warranty coverage). So far they've told me there are 5 different parts wrong with my trans over the time this mechanic has had my car (both the first and present time) and two of them I've already paid for. The trans is newer than the vehicle and was replaced in 2008 because of a recall.

I'm getting frustrated since this vehicle issue has impacted my job. Does anyone know what I can do for this issue? I'm feeling a little like the current place is just throwing parts at my cost though I'm not sure if I'm just having trust issues from being defrauded.

What a mess! This has been at a place or TWO MONTHS with no definite answers!

Time to find a transmission specialty shop. You've thrown out prices from $500-$1,000 for diagnosis then $4,000 for a fix with no real answers!

NO - Time for a place that has a clue,

Re: 2005 Jeep hard shifting Sign In

Thanks for the reply. That's what we're planning to do. They did take the trans out for the diagnostic but they now want the $4k for a remanned trans. I still doubt that this is necessary so I'm taking it to a specialty shop next and will just have to eat that diagnostic fee. Any help from here to see if we can actually do the repair ourselves would still be helpful. The dealership is saying that they are reading different codes now so I can update this post once I get the codes from them.

This all has really stunk for you. Too much time and $$ for little real anything.

The transmission biz is a trade to itself. Yes - many dealers don't do them even under new vehicle warranty but with agreements with trans shops.

In the trade you if thru a comprehensive program you touch upon all aspects of mechanical things, body and paint was again its own trade and need to know where they cross. To do this takes extra space and tooling up for doesn't make sense for all places to do all aspects in one location.

Fine. They've wasted tons of your time and money and that stinks. If they don't do this kind of work then they send it out and you get a fixed vehicle back - done.

This really isn't an area now you'll save a ton unless you did buy a lot of info on what now is the exact right trans for it now and go used from a real good salvage yard that knows what fits what without hacking it all up. That's not as good as a proper rebuild unless by a stroke of luck a vehicle was just done up right and salvaged for another reason.

The hunt IMO for you is to find the right person or whole shop that is one stop to just drop it off and pick it up fixed knowing how much at worst it could cost up front.

Sent out several for folks not to be done by me. Find out that problem trans wasn't good enough to even redo so that ads $$ for a good used one to rebuild working or not you end up with a rebuilt trans.

You are the customer and shouldn't have to do anything but hear the estimated cost to fix it and that maybe that this one can't be done for some reason? IDK - I'm not doing this job for you.

Just find the right place is the whole answer best for you,

T

Re: 2005 Jeep hard shifting Sign In

I wanted to clarify something really quick. The trans was apparently not replaced (despite the dealership telling me so). What was actually involved with the recall was replacing installing a bracket to fix a problem with being unable to go into park. So scratch that. The transmission is from 2005.

Re: 2005 Jeep hard shifting Sign In

Post #4 back a couple Gary, our transmission specialist here asked you for the VIN#. So? That will ID this transmission.

This has gone nuts. All this time and money so far has been wasted. Doesn't seem like you are going to DIY this so perhaps he can at least quote what the whole thing would cost if it was missing entirely as in like stolen and be done with it.

No info so far says it's fixable or not to me nor you. Those prices are high enough to toss everything about it.

Post that # and let him tell you what you should do or as I said where you should take this and ideas of possible costs,

T
