What can I do to prevent the transmission fluid from mixing with the radiator fluid.

I understand your concern. You don't want your transmission destroyed and Pathfinders had problems with that. Two options. Replace the radiator or install an external transmission cooler.
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Of those two options I recommend the radiator change. For one thing, heat transfer is many times higher with liquid than air. Thats why you succumb to hypothermia in water much faster than air of the same temp. Also, the heat exchanger being in the radiator aids in getting your fluids up to the right temp when cold. The engine warming up warms the fluid in the trans. This is why even vehicles that come factory with auxiliary air to air coolers still route through the heat exchanger in the radiator first.

I'll second that - go for the new radiator - best you can find.
The name "trans cooler" can be misleading but is the only word we use. I'd rather call it what Nick just mentioned it really moderates the temp of trans fluid not just make it as cold as it can get which you don't want,

What's wrong with doing both and get twice the cooling?

Yes - ones seen (havent' added one for myself) use extra up front of all AND use radiator as well. As said it's both cooler and a warmer keeping fluid to a dull roar without the extremes that kill transmissions.
Cold weather packaged vehicles would put radiator so called coolers on the incoming hot tank of a radiator not the cooler side as super cold isn't good either for oil flow in general,

That's interesting because I did an AC job on a 2005 Chrysler 300. Guess where they put the transmission cooler?
