2007 Explorer 4.0 code P0741

I have 2007 Explorer 4.0 2WD with a 5R55s transmission that has 218k miles. Recently the orange wrench symbol popped up on the dash (drivetrain error) but never a check Engine light. Car runs and shifts normally. I added a qt of mercon v trans fluid as it has had a small leak at the trans cooler and cleared the code but it came right back. The light clears after the car is cut off and comes back after about 10 mins of driving. I have replaced the trans filter approx ever 50k and never noticed much metal hair on the magnet in the pan. The trans has always clunked going into reverse but that’s about it. I spoke to one gentleman at a trans shop and he told me to see if overdrive would engage/disengage and it does as normal, the RPMs jump when I turn off over drive. This car is not worth more than 2k if I didn’t have this issue so I don’t want to put a new trans in it. Any advice on what a cost effective fix would be? It’s going to a reputable trans shop but they are 8 days out before they can see it. I’m trying to limit how much I drive but agin it drives perfectly with no issues to speak of. Any advice greatly appreciated!

The code refers to a problem with the torque converter or the torque converter solenoid. Adding a quart of fluid won't fix that. You have to get over a certain speed to see that problem show up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Quote Matt- ">I added a qt of mercon v trans fluid as it has had a small leak at the trans cooler<" Well, that has to be fixed no matter what happens it won't heal. Just a maybe sucking air then not, who knows till that's fixed or you'll be a pedestrian over it, T

Hello, This is a mechanical code, basically saying that the converter can no longer fully lock-up, could be the converter, valvebody or a bushing problem. If you have access to a scan tool with live transmission data, see what your slip rpm is when in lock up. Gary
