I recently acquired a 2010 Malibu with 120000 miles. Engine runs great and transmission will shift from first to second with no problem but will not go any higher. (reverse works fine also). Not sure where to start to look for solution. It is the LS model with the 4 cylinder engine. Any help would definitely be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it possible that it is a computer problem that would require the computer to be flashed?

That's always possible.............. not very likely but always possible. As goiserclause pointed out, you need to have it checked for codes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Im not great with transmissions, but that code is for 1-2 shift solenoid. Have you checked trans fluid level and quality? A good scan tool with datastream would be helpful. Do you have access to one? Dont have access to my data right this minute, but I believe that solenoid is only accessed internally, and takes a bit of work to get to. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... was told that it is the "a" solenoid. Going to try to replace it and the filter this weekend. Beats replacing the whole transmission!

How did you determine the 1-2 shift solenoid was the problem? It is a performance code so that means it could be the wiring, solenoid, PCM, connectors, valve body issue, etc. That is a big job and requires dropping the subframe which means supporting the engine. Would hate to hear that you did all that work and the solenoid didn't solve your issue. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Had the shop mechanic at the company I work for diagnose it for me. Won't be doing it this weekend since the car is covered in snow , hopefully I'll get it in the garage by next weekend.

Finally got around to getting it into the garage and replaced the solenoid and filter. It seems to have taken care of the problem. Car runs and shifts great! The solenoid I replaced was actually falling apart when I took it out. Thanks for all your help and advice.
