46RE Shift kit Sign In

Hey guys I'm looking to get a shift kit for my 46re transmission on my 2000 dodge ram 1500. It's got original equipment. I'm looking at the transgo shift kit that seems to be all that anyone is talking about. Just wanted to ask if there was a better shift kit or if transgo is the way to go. Also what kind of modifications I would need to do to the tranny to help it accept the kit and not fudge it up. And last but not least if there was any other mods I could do to strengthen my transmission or engine or differential. Thanks a ton guys any advice will help. You guys are the best!

before any products like this be sure to add a transmission cooler.

remember origional equiptment is the best. So why do you need a shift kit?

We'll one reason is it's shifting pretty badly. I heard I can just install the kit with hand tools and some minor modifications but nothing about a tranny cooler.

Re: 46RE Shift kit Sign In

not shifting right a 'kit' won't help. Is the Ck ENg Light on?

step 1 describe shifting issue -
step 2, get the system scanned and post ALL codes - scan is free at autozone advance orielys et al
auto parts stores....

Some modifications will negatively affect drivability - is vehicle STOCK ?

Re: 46RE Shift kit Sign In

That's the thing no engine codes what so ever. The shift kit is to improve the shifting and increase the durability. The shifting I'm experiencing now is hard engaging when I hand shift it from park to reverse or drive. It over revs pretty much a majority of the time other times it's pretty solid. When it automatically shifts it feels late and feels like it slips. Over revs a lot when I'm city driving it's like it just sits at the edge of shifting into I want to say 3rd gear when I want it to stop and shift to 3rd gear I press a little more on the accelerator to get it to just shift. It's normally around 30-40 mph it starts over revving. I have a 200 dollar code scanner at home. I know there are things wrong with it cause I can feel and hear them but when I ran the scanner if got absolutely nothing.

Re: 46RE Shift kit Sign In

TransGo is a great kit. They were geared towards fixing the factory shortcomings in their design to allow the trans to drive better and last longer. The founder was a real genius. I would use their kits in any rebuild, stock or not.

As Kev mentioned, you should get codes scanned. Sometimes just a bad solenoid can cause this issue. Heat is the enemy of automatic trans, and so is using the wrong fluid. With Chrysler you absolutely have to be using ATF+4. Its expensive, but you are guaranteed to destroy this if anything else has been used. The shift kit will help an already healthy trans, it will not fix one on its way out.

Usually these kits will be in the valvebody, possibly a new shuttle valve or two and different springs going in different places for accumulators and such. Also, they will recommend different placements of checkballs inside the valvebody. Doing them in chassis can be a pain. Make sure you have some green TransGel to paste them in during assembly so they don't fall out. Trust me, you need to do it and do not use bearing grease. You must use TransGel. Bearing grease will not mix with the ATF.

If you choose to rebuild this, I will tell you right now that unless you have a lot of experience with these and a lot of specialty tools you will not end up saving anything. Most all shops only remove and install trannies for this reason. You can do the R&R yourself to save the labor there, but you will have to be sure you fully flush the cooler or contaminants will kill the new trans early. Make sure to remove the crank sensor before pulling the trans and don't put it back in until the trans is installed. They break easy.

Re: 46RE Shift kit Sign In

I looked at the rebuilding aspect and I decided to make this one last as long as I can and buy a remanufactured 46re tranny from rockauto or if you know of a place I can get a remanufactured one for cheaper that would be great. But the remanufactured is stronger and more reliable but costs 2000 and I'm a college student I don't have that money to spend right now. Up to this point I have done all my own mechanics on it but the transmission I feel if it's what you all say is out of my abilities. Unless I can get tutored or something. But like I said the truck isn't showing a check engine light at all. I had to replace a few sensors almost a year ago because the tranny was over heating and the over drive would shut off on me. That's where I'm at right now.

Re: 46RE Shift kit Sign In

Trans issues many times will not set an engine light. Chrysler had a separate TCM and it takes a high-end scan tool to access it. You can look on YouTube and see vids some people have made about rebuilding these units. Remember anyone can put one there and some don't have a clue what they are doing. You kinda need to weed them out.

Your problems sound a lot like low pump pressure. If you can borrow or rent a transmission pressure test kit that would help. You can get an ATSG manual for this trans also that will tell you the specs for pressure and give you some illustrations to show you where the pressure ports are at and what the readings should be. Good information to have to know where to go in diagnosis. Manuals aren't that much, easily found on EBay and Amazon. They are a great wealth of info on transmission rebuilding.

I would talk to local rebuilders. That price might be a lot higher because you're going online. It has to be shipped. You might have some issues in warranty if they are not local to you for repairs. Its easy to get something wrong rebuilding them, and we are all human. Not having a local shop that did the build there for issues down the road could be a problem. If you are interested in upgrades, your rebuilder can customize the build with different parts based on how you drive it and what you have done to the engine. If you can find a local shop with a good rep, keep your money local and I think you will get more trans for your buck.
