46re transmission output shaft Sign In

I just had a 46re rebuilt out of my 98 cherokee, and before I installed it. I want to know if this is a problem. cause i do not remember when i took it out.

The inner output shaft is very hard to turn, is this normal? maybe cause it is all brand new so its very tight? I can bearly turn it by hand. More like i need a vice grip to turn it. I hear no grinding or anything like that. anything will help. thanks.

Hello,
When you say the inner output shaft, do you mean the one that splines into the overdrive section, and not the one that sticks out the back. Gary

I'm sorry I said it wrong. lol. i meant the input shaft for the torque converter. the transmission is all together. and i seem to have no end play. I have tried to pull the shaft out or push in. nothing, I'm thinking they make have not shimmed it correctly.

Something is wrong, lossen up the pump bolts, and see if the pump pops up, if it does it may be out a clutch from one of the drums. Were you playing with shims or just put it back the way it came apart. Gary

I didn't adjust the shims. I'm thinking what you just said. there is a clutch out that is not seated. when i take the pump off, everything spins free. soon as i put the pump in, it takes a vise grip to turn it.

Hello,
Probably some kind of assembly error, tale the pump out make sure foward and direct clutches are seated, did you change any hard parts? Gary

No hard parts. just a TCI soft rebuild kit, and solenoids.

Ok, pull the front of the trans apart make sure the clutches are all in place. The pump should sit flat, meaning when your tightening down the bolts the pump should not be drawn down further than where its sitting. Gary

Re: 46re transmission output shaft Sign In

I got it. I'm honestly not sure what was misaligned. But I pulled the pump and valve body. Took off the front band, reset all the clutches. I reinstalled the pump. could only get it so far with my hands torqued the bolts and drew the oil pump all the way down. It spins now by hand with really grabbing it, but I now have good end play of about .035. so I am going to run with. Thank you Gary for your help.
