4T65E Trans in Buick Regal 1999 GS - Gears, Drum Stick Out Upon Reassembly Sign In

My brother has spent weeks on his 1st trans repair, replacing a fwd apply band.
The sub-frame, engine and transmission are all lowered.
Upon re-assembly of the trans, the plates are not flush, and not just by a little.
Disassembly and reassembly did not produce a fix.
The planetary gears and drum stick out far too much.
The 1999 model required disconnection of the sub-frame, etc., to
wrestle the exterior housing off the trans. The fwd apply band was replaced,
but now the plate will not bolt up flush over the gears. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for your time.
Again, it is a 4T65E transmission in a 1999 Buick Regal GS.

Hello,

Im Gary, a transmission shop owner and the rebuilder, im alittle confused, is the transmission out of the car and on the bench? also, are you saying the channel plate wont sit flush(the channel plate goes on right after the chain and sprockets). Gary

The transmission is still in the car. The first plate that goes over the gears will not bolt up flush.
The gears, etc. have been pushed as far in as they will go. The gap is uneven, smaller towards
the front of the car, larger towards the back. He is working from an exploded diagram we found
online.
In order to remove the external housing on the transmission, the engine and transmission had to
be lowered, and the sub-frame had to be disconnected and lowered. It was still a bear to get the
housing off. We have been told this issue was resolved in the very next model of the car, to make it
easier.
The gears, chain and drum can not be installed with everything in a position as if the car were ready
to drive, except for the axle and wheel, etc.
I suppose it is possible, although extremely unlikely, that he has got something installed wrongly. But
he has disassembled and reassembled the thing three times now. He seems to be familiar with the terms
for each part.
Thank you for your reply.

Hello,
Make sure the double sprag assembly is all the way splined in to the 2 sets of clutches in the input drum, then you have the 2nd clutch drum on top of that, seems like maybe the clutches are not all the way splined in. Certainly not easy to do while in the car, if you can make a fixture and support the engine from the top then you can take the frame out(back in the day we would use a drive shaft and chains, but now we have a fixture that goes across the top of the engine)Gary

While the terminology is Greek to me, I have taken apart, repaired and re-assembled
a Bridgeport mill, an engine lathe and a laser micrometer, and solved much more ethereal
problems, and what you say rings true to me. I will forward the information and report
back on what will probably end in success. He is taking some R & R, but will be back
Friday for a 2nd assault.
In the meantime, enjoy a laugh or two, and a million thanks -

A guy goes to a doctor, and is frantic.
Doc, you gotta help me, he says. I keep having this recurring dream.

The doc says, settle down,
you're two tense (tents).

(I have nothing against Poles, but I think this is a good one) -
A guy goes into a store, and tells the cashier
I'd like some breadski, some milkski and some eggski.
The guy says you're Polish, aren't you?
He says yes, how did you know?
The cashier replies because you put "ski" on the end of everything you say.
The next day, the guy goes into the same store, and there is a different cashier.
He says I would like some bread, some milk, and some eggs.
The guy says you're Polish, aren't you?
He says yeah, how did you know?
Because this is a hardware store.
