4 + 3 Transmission Problem Sign In

86 Vette with 4 + 3 Trans. gets harder to shift as the car gets to operating temps. Bought the car used and the seller said the clutch was replaced. Car has a self adjusting clutch and slave that does not need bleeding. There is a slight drip from the overdrive unit, yet it has plenty of fluid. Although the fluid looks more black than red. The manual portion of the transmission has plenty of fluid that looks to be in good condition. It does not matter if the overdrive unit is on or off. Also, it seems like the clutch gets harder to depress as the car gets hotter. According to the specs book, the car should run between 190 & 255 degrees. It typically runs between 170 and 205. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Does it have the proper amount of freeplay in the clutch pedal which should be an inch or two.

Sometimes folks replace clutches and let the trans hang on the shaft of the trans which can bend up the new clutch like a warped record album while they tighten up the trans. NOT good. It may not be that but it does cause problems. Not sure how temp sensitive that would be.

Nail the clutch hard to the floor and if it gets easier to shift that's an area to look. Always support the weight of the trans until it has at least one bolt tightend up, T

Yes there does seem to be enough (proper) play in the clutch. If the clutch is warped I would think there would be some noise. There is no noise, odd sounds, or smells coming from the trans. This seems to be a very strange problem.

A warped clutch disk should make noise but just woudn't work well. Sometimes they shake or chatter (an unsmooth feel) but if you feel decent freeplay that probably isn't it.

I think I would change out the gear oil(s) for new and go synthetic and that may make a big difference. The new oil(s) should work as a cleanser and if you notice a difference do it again later and you may avoid something expensive, T
