1985 Nissan Sentra Station Wagon 1.6L, SOHC, 2BL, 4 Cylinder,
5 Speed Manual
110,000 miles

5th gear is gone. For a while it would just pop out now it wont stay in.

I'd like to fix it. I understand that most people wont think it is worth it to keep it but the car is solid, besides this, and is a blast to drive. I am not sure where to start, what to look for when I pull it open, etc. I know I can buy a new tranny from O'riley for 1G but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible. Also, "don't use 5th" does not count as fixing the issue.

Have you called around some tranny shops in your area to see if they can fix it? Have you inspected your shift linkage to be sure it isn't worn out or loose and/or it has engine or transmission mount issues?? If linkage and mounts look good, the transmission will probably need to come apart to find out what is wrong. Worn bearings and/or internal shift rail issues are a possibility.

Hello,
Well i havent seen one of these in about 20years, im thinking this unit is mounted on the left side of the car, can you tell me if there is and end cover on this unit with about 6 bolts, if you cant see from the top, look through the front left wheel well see if theres a cover, if there is thats where 5th lives.
