86 Chevy V10- not wanting to shift Sign In

Hi guys, so I have an 86 Chevy V10, 454 big block, 700r4 trans. This truck has been one issue after another since I got it almost 2 years ago. Long story short I put a new Edelbrock 1406 600cfm electric choke carb in it over a year ago and couldn't get it to run right. Shortly after the trans burned out and I just got around to replacing that. So I have driven it a few times since then, but now it doesnt want to shift. I took it out today, and at first it shifted fine
Then as it warmed up it didnt want to go into OD. Then it wouldn't go into 3rd. Then i had to manually shift on the column to get it into 2nd. I just now figured out, after extensive research into TV cable adjustment, that a TV cable alignment bracket was supposed to be installed on the carb. Does this sound like it could be related? Advice?? I am a noob at this so sorry if it's real obvious.
I need some guidance on this and can't find much helpful info on the internet relating my my truck specs. Just hoping I didnt burn out another transmission.

? It's a V8 if that wasn't a typo this isn't for you out of the gate.
The OE carb if used a riveted in choke with a wire that would heat it up quickly to shut off. The "Edelbrock" carb should be an exact fit to the exact right intake manifold. There were tons of vacuum trees to operate choke pull offs, front one right away when started, rear one (is a 4V isn't it?) was hell on wheels to adjust an almost stall idle held to actual intended idle with a fixed diaphragm that pushed as I recall. This from memory not the web.
Not sure what CFM carb should have been but 600 CFM isn't the right carb for a 454 CID same as calling it a 7.4 liter super hog workhorse engine. The vacuum ports and where they are from source both intake and on carb all over it are very intentional. Low vacuum ports (there are) or zero at low RPM are "Venturi" vacuum ports detect air flow as in how fast air is going thru. Throttle position calculated with that dictates which gear transmission should be in along with either a cable/rod or maybe sensed and converted to an electric sensor in trans (many details were different based on load ability of trucks and type of use - know that.


In short if it hangs low gears too long or higher gears way too long you'll stress transmission. Now you've lost 3rd I'm not the site's trans expert but probably burned another one - too bad these are pretty tough if right.
Rock and hard place the carbs were lousy when new then but worked if everything right.
Trying to be shorter but do you have the OE carb for this? If so put it back on you can still fix it used to come with clear instructions how to drill out rivets for choke and knock out caps over idle mixture screws so you could at least clean one up fully. Butt heads also used a "clutch" screw for those is like a filled in figure 8 you can get.
What do you want to do now if nice enough to fix this all up (I would if unrusted) put old carb back as 600 CFM can't be right unless a typo too small for this engine guess at least 750 maybe more. So it's wrong nothing is going to fit or work right with that.


Sorry for the long thread, carb stuff last couple years really was a challenge both electrical and vacuum hose up the butt did put a color diagram on fan shield doubt is there or readable if it is. Yes they put color stripes on rubber hose!
Super short - do you want to go back to OE stuff or fight with this?

Did you ever determine the cause of the original transmission failure? It's possible the cooler in the trans is plugged up and the trans is overheating.

Hello,
Yes, if the cable is not adjusted correctly, the trans will shift late,early or not at all. The trans also uses a govenor located behind a round cover left side rear of trans, if the valve inside the govenor is stuck or dragging it will not shift correctly and make sure the plastic gear is not worn either.
