Iv'e got an 88 Beretta w/ a 2.8 engine. Here's what it's doing, it won't shift when I drive it easy but it shifts ok when I get on it. It will stay in low as long as I just cruise I have to floor it and drive it hard to get it to go through the gears. The fluid is full and doesn't smell burned. What do I need to look at to get it to shift? Thanks. DG

Basics here. The car shifts based on speed, load on engine, and throttle position. It sounds like a vacuum leak. Some intake manifold sensor thinks you are asking for full throttle when you are not and will stay in lower gears too long. In wicked old cars this mechanical, but the same stuff is there but sending info to a computer and if it get the wrong info it doesn't know what to do. Look for vac leaks first. Clean looking ATF is a good sign that this is not "Game Over" for the trans. "Actual Manifold Pressure" (which is really vacuum) dictates what the load is on the engine. At full load the pressure is low or zero and the car thinks it's pulling a trailer up wind with your foot to the floor and should behave that way if you were. Look around for some simple things first, vac leaks, wires that don't look right or are burned, and connections for all, Good luck,
