93 buick century transmission problem Sign In

Hello everyone,
i have a 93 buick century custom 3.3.
2 days ago a friend was driving the car and he told me when he started the car after parking for a while, it didn't shift gears.
I tried to shift the gears couple times but when i move the lever it doesn't shift to neither reverse, nor drive. Nothing except a slight RPM changing sound and the automatic door locks.
What do you think may be the problem? Could it be something simple like a selenoid or activator, or do you think it's the transmission itself?

I think i need to mention that i had an amateur friend replace the transmission fluid and filter couple months ago and i too started hearing a louder clunk when i shifted to reverse or drive. I think we may have used more fluid than we neded to.

No gear engagement and your linkage is good along with the proper level of transmission fluid means you need to connect a line pressure gauge up to the transmission and see what the pressures are. More than likely the transmission will need an overhaul. It's not an electrical issue causing that because both 440T4 (4T60) and 3T40(125C) both use governors for shift timing.

Thank you Descretesignals.
I don't know too much about cars, i think it has a governor means the system is all mechanical?
If the transmission needs an overhaul, does that mean it needs to be opened? People are talking about four digits for a transmission repair, in that case i might need to scrap the car. I don't want it to come to that because other than the transmission issue, the car is in great condition. I will appreciate all ideas you could give.

Your welcome.

Overhaul means the transmission has to come apart, pieces inspected, and wear items replaced to bring it back to factory specifications.

You should call around and get some estimates in your area.

Thanks again.
Couldn't have chance to have it looked at yet but i realized that when i shift to neutral i can move the car while i can't move it in park gear.
Does it mean the gears are shifting or does it indicate anything at all?
Doesn't engage to drive or rear though.

Also do you have any ideas for how i can make sure the problem is %100 transmission before i take it to a mechanic? The towing expences are going to come in.

Sounds like a tranny problem.

If the speedo registers speed while in D & not moving it may have a broken axle.....

That's the problem when "friends" drive your car, sometimes you don't get the real story when something bad happens.
That "little tiny bump I gently went over going real slow" was actually a huge hole in the road hit doing 65mph while they were reaching the back seat for another beer.....Unsure
