94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE

with 4 speed overdrive trans. why is it these older vans dont throw transmission codes ? anyway limp mode only second gear only. i'm not getting juice to the shift solenoid so that explains why its not shifting. i tried switching relays with another one in the relay block and that didnt work. SOOOOOOO! how do i solve this without a transmission scanner ?

Hello, under the dash to the left of steering column, there is a 6 or 8 pin blue connector, plug into that and get the trans codes, this will give us direction on what you need to change to fix the car. Gary

Gary i appreciate your quick reply. maybe your having a bad day or your missing you glasses but would you mind going back to my post and do you see where it says "HOW DO I SOLVE THIS WITH OUT A SCANNER" so what am i suppose to plug in ? and just so you and everybody else knows i'm not only having a bad day i'm having a bad life. so if i was expressing this in person there would be numerous swear words and profanity thats how fed up i am with life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS

Hello, Sorry, read it quick, my trans shop is packed with cars, you need to take it somewhere to have it scanned, some shops may offer a free scan or free diagnostic. Call a couple of local shops in your area. Gary

Hello, Ok, code 42 is 2-4 solenoid circuit error, that means it can only be the solenoid pack, wire or computer. you would have to do a ohms test to determine which one it is, i can explain how to do this, do you have an ohm meter?

yes. but before we go there. i should have juice going to the hot wire to the solenoid pack and it should be hot all the time when the key is turned on. is there a reason you seem to be ignoring that fact ?

Hello, When the car is in failsafe the computer cuts off voltage to the solenoid pack so there will not be any voltage present. When you ohm the solenoid pack, your actually checking that wire at the same time. Gary

Ok, First disconnect negative battery terminal, I think the TCM is located on the right side of the car in the engine compartment(its a 60 way connector) get an 8mm or 10mm socket and disconnect the harness from the computer, now take off the black plastic backing to expose the wires going into the 60 way connector, clean it down and look for numbers on the connector, you should see at one end #1 and other end#20 on the top row, middle row 21 other end 40, bottom row 41 other end 60. Now with your ohm meter put the postive lead to pin #17 red wire(thats #4 at solenoid pack) with the negative lead go to pins 19,20,59 and 60,(these are solenoid grounds) do one at a time and record the reading, all the readings should be the same when its good, the readings should be about 1.5 ohms to 2.2 ohms. Again, all the readings must be the same, if you ha 3 at 1.5 and 1 at 2.0 thats no good. I have a feeling that one of the solenoids will be way out of range, check that and let me know what you find and we can go from there. If by chance the pack is bad, and your going to change it, they have been updated so it looks different. Any questions just let me know. Gary

ok pin 19 there was nothing and 20,59, and 60 were the same with 1.5 ohms so what does that tell us ?

That means you have an open circuit in the 2-4 solenoid circuit. Now you need to see if the open is located in the wiring or the actual solenoid pack. Unplug the solenoid pack connector and see if you have continuity from terminal 8 at the solenoid pack connector and pin 19 at the TCM connector on the white wire. If you have continuity, the problem is with the solenoid pack or it's electrical connector terminals. If you don't have continuity, you have an open wire in the harness somewhere. Be careful front probing those connector terminals with your meter. You don't want to jam your probes in the terminals and spread them open or you will have other issues. You can also probe for continuity from the pin in the solenoid pack cavity itself that correspond to PIN 8 (white) and the PIN 4 (red). You should see the solenoid resistance. Personally I don't use the ohm meter too much unless I know for a fact it is a open circuit and I'm try to locate a break. Voltage drop testing eliminates the issues of ohm testing circuits. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Ok, do a continuity check on the wire #19 from the tcm down to the solenoid pack (if your ohm meter has tone, set it on that) if it has continuity change the solenoid pack. Disconnect the 8 wire connector at the solenoid pack and just touch each wire until you hear the tone, that will confirm the wire is good. (i can almost say with 100% certainty that the solenoid pack is no good, but i always check the wire first). Gary

OK, the solenoid pack you will be purchasing is updated, when you have the pack let me know, the current solenoid pack that is on the car now if its never been changed is the old style that has a metal plate inbetween the case and the solenoid pack, that metal plate is no longer used with the updated pack. so your absolutely sure thats the problem ? if i get one from a wrecking yard does it have to come off a caravan,voyager or a t&c specifically do you know what years ? i'm guessing as long as it has the 4 overdrive trans ? and then will it have to be what they refer to as flashed ?what does that entail ?

New design packs are cheap enough, i would go to the dealer(price it out) They are all the same doesnt matter what car it comes off of. Not sure if i would go used on this part. They redesigned the pack because of internal cracking and pressure loss (plastic was used) now in the new design pack that was eliminated, but the solenoids still can short out. with theTCM unplugged, you checked the solenoids and wires, if the wire checked good and you had an open circuit on pin 19 cant really be anything elese. It does not need to be programmed after installed, if you disconnect the battery, the shift adapts may go back to "basic settings" that means the car will have to be driven hot and no codes present for the shifts to relearn, if you leave the battery connected, get the codes cleared. i just have a hard time dealing with the thought if i put a new shift solenoid into it and it doesnt solve the problem then what might it be. i dont think the van is worth putting new parts into. its 23 years old and the body isnt in the greatest shape but it still runs decent. without a scanner i'm in limbo. just to be clear on pin 19 when it was connected to the shift solenoid i should have gotten the same readings as the other pins correct ? and that points directly at the shift solenoid.what does that specific solenoid control that it effects 1st gear or or 3rd and 4th. i went to one dealer and they said they could order one for about 300$ i dont think its worth that risk

Pin #19 is the control wire for the 2-4 solenoid, the computer turns it on and off by grounding the circuit. Yes, you should have gotten all the same readings on your ohm meter. If you get a good used updated solenoid pack, you may need a gasket, updated solenoid pack gasket is different from previous design. Gary

oik i all ready have a gasket i dont know if its a newer one or an old one. is there any way to tell ? are there numbers on them ? and i found a van at the wrecking yard so i figured to try and get as close to the age of my van. is my logic on or off ? if i put the gasket on the replacement shift solenoid will the difference be notice able ?
