96 Intrepid won't shift past 2nd Sign In

I have a '96 Dodge Intrepid, 3.5l with 150,000 miles. When I first start the car and start driving, it shifts 1st to 2nd just fine then when it should shift it to 3rd, it acts like the transmission disengages and the engine just revs up. When I let of the gas, it goes back to 2nd and shifts between 1st and 2nd normally but doesn't go past 2nd. As long as I don't shut off the engine, it won't disengage when it should be shifting in to 3rd. The next time I start the car and drive it it does the whole thing (disengaging at 3rd) all over again.

The ATF looks and smells fine and isn't low. The service engine light doesn't come on and their are no codes stored.

Is this more likely a transmission problem or an electrical problem (TCM, solenoids, sensor)?

You could try to get a code reading for this but if that's an original trans you are getting there anyway,

It is more than likely the input or output speed sensor on the transaxle. We usually replace them in pairs. The cost is not too much and fairly easily changed out.

First, thanks for the replys. Second, I mistyped the engine, it's a 3.3l, I can't imagine that would make much of a difference though.

I have since read from several different sources that this model had a lot of problems with loose wires and connectors and grounding issues at the control solenoids, TCM, and sensors, so I will be checking that out.

Are the input and output sensors a dealer item or can they be purchased aftermarket?

The only Chrysler dealer near me has a very bad reputation and I would much rather do business elsewhere.

Tom, as far as I know, it's the original trans...... Also, I guess I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say.

Hi,

I was trying to say that 150,000 miles is about all I would expect for an automatic transmission to last before needing an overhaul just anyway in some vehicles. Some go forever, some seem more routine by miles. There are wearing parts along with sensors (which might be the case now) that usually show up as burnt fluid but not always.

A lot depends on the way a vehicle is driven and trans oil and filter changes as to how long they will last,

T

Ps: For rough service use trans oil coolers help lots - still 150k is up there.......

That's what I assumed you were saying, but I wasn't quite sure. I haven't had the car very long and I have know idea how it was driven or maintained in the past.

I'm usually more verbos then I was there!

What the issue is, is how long do things last?

Lot's of factors come into play in motor vehicles. I'll say that most are basically designed to be trouble free for about 60,000 miles except for tires, brakes filters. After that the care it's been given is the pay dirt.

Wild average expectations by item IMO:

Engine - 200K

Trans - 75 -150K

Steering and Suspension: Varies wildly car to car.

Interior seat springs, uphostery assorted stuff - 100+ or - highly dependant on treatment and exposure.

Body - Rust - Climate and storage rule.

Assorted gadgets - who knows but things tend to go after the 60K mark hit or miss from there after??
