Mom's car and is makes the slightest humming type noise only when starting from a stop and quit that in seconds. 64K one owner cared for vehicle - no towing, but a light just sheet metal accident in it's history. Didn't make this noise after the fix for that. Hey - I'm a mechanic but If a problem dissapears in seconds and vehicle drives like new I'm as lost as anyone. Just don't even know for sure if it's the transmission. Hoping someone has been thru this otherwise just have to wait for it to get worse. It's a real pest to diagnose. Again, It's a 96, 5.7 , 4WD all history known. TIA for any clues, Tom

Tom I’ll have a look on Monday when ‘m back at work for any TSB’s that may address this. If you think it maybe in the trans and you haven’t serviced it in a while it wouldn’t hurt to start with that. I heard spool valves vibrate due to a restricted filter starving the pump? Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thanks Dan for the reply and idea. UPDATE - I am the only one driving this vehicle for now and the noise is worse every day. It now sounds like some standard shift cars do in reverse. This noise goes away but now will make the noise by just slowing down under 10 MPH and does it in reverse too! I've talked to my friends in the biz but at that time it wasn't doing much wrong and we all agreed on how hard it is fix what aint broken!! If you find a TSB that would be awesome. Mom has a car to use for as long as needed. Not handy because it's yet another Town car and she needs a rolling walker to get around and you have to fold it up. She needs the Suburban with the back that has barn doors and holds handicapped stuff without folding it up and has running boards which really helps a comremised person get in and out. To heck with the price of gas she needs it! The good news is I know the best trans shop east of the Mississippi and he wholesales work to me and I can't do this job myself. No equipment nor the tools for this type of stuff. THANKS again for any and all help - as said it's getting worse fast so now we should be able to diagnose this. T

Tranmission is done. On the next probem which is rear A/C evap and lines and I sent that out to friends and they are stuck waiting for parts. I spent a tank of gas to get started but a big family wedding was coming so that went out. Still not done with all the help I can find. Frustrating!! T

Tom, Sorry to hear about the transmission going out on your mom's truck. I know what you mean about not doing it youself. Those transmissions with a T-case connected to them are HEAVY. Not fun laying on your back, doing it by yourself. I Hope everything goes OK for you. Brian.

Yea, In general I don't do transmissions but have. Story: Last full year of college a classmate needed a transmision in Denver! He lived in NJ. I'm from MA and always have been and bring tons of tools. Nobody had any big money so we got a good used one. Car still drove so we parked it up on a couple of those cement parking bumpers. Except for a couple years I've always worked on my back. Second one from salvage was good and he made it home. T

I know what you mean!!! As you know Tom, I’m a dump truck driver that does automotive work on the side. The shop where I work isn’t a repair shop, it’s a landscape company. The building we are in use to be a automotive repair shop and has 7 in-ground hoists. I’m now spoiled because the boss doesn’t care if I do side work in the shop….. It’s nice to have a hoist to use whenever I need it. Of all the people that work there, I’m the only guy who uses any of the hoists, other than when I use them…. They just go unused!!! Tom, if you lived closer to me…. I’d put the transmission in for you. Brian.
