1996 dodge Van 2500. 4 speed Auto with O/D. 128k miles. Trans made a whining noise in reverse while cold when I got van with 96K, changed fluid , helped a little. Ran fine after warming up. At 115K changed Fluid in Trans added Lucas, Noise went away. At 127K Noise came back, Van would now stall when stopping unless put in neutral or park, and revving engine slightly when accelerating. Changed fluid , found very fine metal in pan. Almost like what would be in metallic paint. Changed filter and helped a very little. At 128 K started stalling again. Took to Ammco . They tested it by Power breaking trans. Started making a worse noise. Left Ammco and trans failed 2 miles down road. Had van towed home. Van goes back in gear with no noise and works for about 2 minutes then noise comes back and stalls upon stopping. oo YEA cHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON SHOWING 2/3 SLIP AND LOCKUP FAILURE

Hello, The Stalling is the converter not releasing, Question, when you hear the noise does the noise go away in park and neutral and come back in drive and reverse? or do you hear it in every range? Gary

Noise is only in gear . I think it made noise even in Park at AAMCO but that is only what they told me. wont stay in "gear" long enough to test if makes noise after shifting. It now slips out within a few seconds. Before it got this bad it was originally just making the wine in 1st , but after AAMCO "power break" test started doing it in all gears .. Again only lasting maybe 2 miles before not responding at all. After Van got home wife put in gear and it moved.. NO NOISE.. But then noise came back after a few minutes

Hello, Sounds like the transmission filter is clogged. A clogged trans filter will make the car stop moving when hot, it sounds like something is coming apart inside the unit and clogging the filter. This trans by the way is called a 604 or 41TE, these units are bad or maybe even a better word is junk. Gary
