I bought a 96 vw 5spd manual jetta test drove it ran great no noise next day drove it about 40 mins the next day and it made this horrible grinding noise. took it in to get it inspected and they said the cv joints need to be replaced the right one the worse of the two. the dealer fixed the right one for me but it still makes noise especially in reverse. my normal mechanic is thinking transmission problem. But why whould a bad transmission only make a aloud grinding noise in reverse and nothing else car still drives great. keep in mind i still havent gotten the left cv joint fixed. and IF it is the transmission how much would that cost me. Could it be just the left CV joint. Id appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thank you very much.

You have four CV joints. I don't know anyone who replaces just one as they are called half shafts and two come with a rebuilt one which should suffice.

A noise that only happens in reverse some of which is normal but not annoying probably is a trans problem, T

Hi tom- i bought the car and the day after it made this noise the mechanic said the right front cvjoint was the worse, so i got it replaced the left front cv i am planning on getting fixed next week. the noise like a grinding or rubbing in reverse sounds like its coming from the front end (like the wheels) and only when i have the wheels turned, when i back up straight no noise. i am just not positive its the transmission, what do you think?

OK: CV joints usually express themselves as a crackling sound on turns at first. They do NOT care much about forward or reverse. There could also be wheel bearings involved.

Folks are here to help but this is tough without being there, T
