97 Saturn SL2 Drive axle won't go into transmission Sign In

I am replacing the drive axles on my 97 Saturn SL2, and ran into a problem The passenger side axle connected to the intermediate shaft fine, but the driver side won't go all the way into the transmission. I am not a mechanic, and don't really know what most of the parts are called, but I was following the instructions in my Haynes manual. It said if I had trouble getting the axle to go in, tap on it with a hammer. So I did that, and when it didn't work I pulled the axle back out to see if there was something wrong with it. That's when I noticed that just inside the transmission was a ring-shaped coil that wasn't there before. Not sure what that is, or where it came from, and I can't get the axle to go in to the transmission. Does anywone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Slide the axle onto the the output shaft until it stops. Get the axle shaft lined up nice and straight and give it a nice shove and it should pop over that ring. Sometimes a medium blow with a mallet is required, but usually if you can get a nice straight shot with the axle shaft it will pop on. DO NOT hammer on the end of the axle hard. Make sure you have it started on the splines before you put much force into seating it. They can be tricky. Sometimes a hand on the inner cv joint helping to push it on can help too.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that the ring appears to be blocking the hole, and its loose. It seems like it is supposed to go into a groove around the inside of the hole but it fell. I don;t know if I am explaining it well. The ring wasn't visible in the hole before I tried to shove the axle in, so I am worried that it may be part of the transmission.

Maybe that ring came off the old axle when you pulled it out.

I managed to get it put in. Like he said, it just took a good shove. It seems the ring was part of the seal because it fit right in to place after the axle snapped in. Thanks for all the help guys.
