98 Saturn SL2 no Reverse & I need to intermitantly let off the accelerator for it to shft thru the Forward Gears!!

Could this be linkage or VAC issues I know nothing about A/T but I'm comfortable doing advanced diagnostics if told what tools I need & the jist of how to use them

Re: 98 Saturn SL2 no Reverse Sign In

This transmission is electronically controlled and does not rely on a vacuum modulator or throttle kick down cable for shifting. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) controls all shifts, shift feel and lock-up torque converter operation; via inputs from the different engine and transmission sensors along with requests from the driver. The PCM does this by manipulating solenoids or a combination of solenoids inside the trans; directing fluid pressure to apply and release clutches and bands.
Take the car in and have it diagnosed as to whether the problem is internal, external, mechanical or electronic. In my opinion that would be the most cost effective way to find the problem. The equipment you’ll need to diagnose this is very expensive and some of it specialized for transmissions; in my opinion doesn’t warrant you buying for a one-time set of tests.
We won’t go into the training (just a bit) and experience required to properly diagnosing today’s vehicles. Especially something as expensive and complicated as transmissions and transmission controls. Not to offend anyone here, but a lot more training then what any message board can provide.
I’ve been in the trade for close to 30 years; I have the equipment and continue taking classes on a regular basis at the community collage trying to keep up with the changes in the industry.
I still get bit every once in a while by the ever-growing, ever-changing gremlin that seems to live inside the electronics and mechanics of today’s vehicles. This creature loves to throw a wrench into all of the theory that we have been taught and try to practice. That’s every time that we make an assumption and not follow a strategy based diagnostic procedure. Let me tell you that when you get bit and misdiagnose something it hurts our/my pride along with the wallet taking a hit. LOL
