98 c1500 transmission issues. Sign In

98 Chevy half ton 2wd 5.0 250k miles

Transmission slips then goes completely out while driving. Then shut it off for 5 minutes or so and it will drive and shift like normal then goes out again. Fluid appears full. Any ideas where to start?

Usually if the transmission were to lose solenoid power or solenoid control by the PCM, the tranny defaults to 2nd. You'll still have reverse too.

How is the fluid level and fluid condition?

When the transmission goes out, do you have reverse or any forward gears?

Are there any trouble codes stored in the PCM? If so, what are the code numbers?

When it's out I've got nothing, rd 1234 they are all gone. Shifts fine after it's shut off for a few minutes, no noise or shuddering. Fluid is still reddish pink, never used any trans fluid. Code status unknown at this time.

More than likely it is going to be an internal problem. A line pressure check would confirm that when it doesn't have any gears. You might want to swing into a transmission shop and have them take a look.
