Greetings to the Auto Gurus! My son's '99 Chev Blazer, 196,000 miles has a very strange problem. When the car is cold (not been run) reverse works fine, when he drives (even a few miles) he no longer has reverse (he puts in in R and nothing) and it shifts hard (up to 35-4000 rpm) before it shifts to second/overdrive in forward. We check the tranny fluid cold and warm and it shows full. He needs this vehicle to get between work and school. I don't think he should drive it until we know what is wrong and/or have it fixed. What could it be? what do we need to check / do etc. Any ideas on estimated cost?? Please help! And Thank you! PS We don't have any burn/smell in the tranny fluid.

Usually the type of thing that shows up after warming up are worn clutches and seals. You might want to let a tranny shop take it for a ride and examine it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Usually when you have no reverse that means the transmission has to come apart and get overhauled, especially with the mileage on that 4L60E. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Can you give me an idea of the cost to do that and how long it might take?

Best bet is to call around transmission shops in your area and get quotes, but you might just want to swing into a shop and have them check that out to confirm what is actually going on. Labor time is around 17 hrs. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
