Just bought this 99 Durango 5.2L 4X4 with a bad transmission.. The guy I bought it off of said in November (I know we had alot of snow around here last November because I was out riding my snowmobile) they was driving it and heard a loud bang, they then drove it home after the bang and after they parked it the transmission would not work anymore.. That's all the info I could get out of the guy because he was not really a mechanically inclined person.. I know nothing when it comes to transmissions myself.. I can pretty much do anything with an engine but just never had any rebuild/diagnosing experience when it comes to transmissions.. What it is doing Park works no need to use blocks Reverse you can hear a small clunk like you would if it had a bad u joint... Drive only thing is you hear a small sound (very quit) like maybe a pump running or something.. All i can tell you on this is you can hear something is going on.. could be just the torque converter though 2nd 1st same as drive I plan on pulling the dust cover and checking out the converter to make sure they didn't just shred the bolts.. this would be my limit to diagnosing a transmission issue lol Any ideal what it may be or anything that you could suggest for me to check would be greatly appreciated.. If its simple enough (something like replacing converter ext..) I probably just do that myself but if it needs something more then I will just take it to a tranny shop.. I just don't want to get ripped off and charged for a rebuild if it doesn't need it.. I would like to have some ideal what it is because as of right now I have no ideal and a shop will just rip me off more then likely... Thanks Jo Edit::: I just listened to where the clunk was coming from, had somebody put it into reverse while I was under it.. It is coming from the converter area, so is the quit noise i was talking about.. When i get time I will be pulling dust cover...

http://www.autozone.com/...eId=0900c152800c043d That link had some good info. With this history I guess the book is open No telling what antics folks will pull when if this was good and stuck in snow when it broke. "Rocking" the vehicle when stuck (if that's what happened) is real hard on things going quickly from forward to reverse with no wait time. Clutches, bands - who knows can take quite a hit. If something really broke off clean I'm surprised it made it back to park it by itself?? Is fluid clean and full? Perhaps if nothing found with the dust shield try dropping the pan and look for disasters in there. It probably will need a tear down to know what it will take, T

Thanks for the reply.. I as well was suspicious about the drive home and then it not working from there... Dunno if the guy was telling the truth or just trying to sell.. Fluid is really clean, almost as if it had been changed recently, don't smell burnt and doesn't appear to have water in it.. I also noted the tranny fluid level on the dipstick (fluid looks almost brand new by the way) then started the truck, placed in neutral then checked dipstick again and it was lower... So, the pump seems to be working.. I am planning on pulling the dust cover then the pan this weekend.. I will let you know what I find, hop fully nothing severe..

If there is no visible signs, I would suspect the flywheel or the torque converter....since the only other thing that could make a sound that loud would be the u-joints breaking.

Oh no! You really didn't need us to tell you did you? Nice pics anyhow. What did they do when they got stuck in this thing - air chisle a hole thru trans to run a cable to pull it out?! Just kidding - it's not funny. Ok: What do you want to do? T

Well I need to find a honest shop in Indianapolis that will not charge me a arm and a leg.. I know of a guy down in greenwood and I gave him a call, he asked if I planed on pushing snow with it and I said no then he quoted $1650 plus tax on parts (roughly $1800) I don't think I am going to beat that price... I would like to rebuild it myself but I think I would be WAY over my head... I also have been looking at buying a tranny online but that seems a bit risky to me... Any ideals you may have?

I'm not too keen on buying something like that online. If you must save some bucks on this try for used - some are well checked out and a good bet - still not free or close - neither is doing it yourself all things added up. You do get the advantage of starting off with a used vehicle and a good trans now so just up and get it done. I hate it with my own if something expensive just pops up just to make it saleable. I didn't see any whole rebuits for sale but some chains or even Crysler may have them if you want to do just the swap out. Good luck with it whatever you decide, T
