'99 Windstar only reverse

99 Ford Windstar
3.8 automatic
FWD
My neighbor just stopped by wanting me to look at his van. Was turning into his driveway and heard a loud pop and then suddenly had only reverse and no forward gears. Any ideas?

Look on drivers side on top of trans and watch shift lever to verify that it moves when shift lever on column is moved. Im guessing it does. Does it make any noise in drive? Hows fluid level/condition?
