After market or rebuilt? Sign In

We have a 2004 dodge caravan with a four cylinder (2.8 liter?) engine with 105,000 miles on it. The transmission is on the way out. This has been confirmed by our mechanic, though we tried a flush out/cleaning/service of the transmission first Now we need to make a decision of after market replacement or rebuilding our transmission. The after market would have a 100,000 mile warranty. If you think rebuilding is a better option then could you please answer the following: How do I find someone reputable to do the rebuild? What kind of warranty should I expect for rebuilding the transmission? What would be a fair price for doing the work? What kind of questions should I be asking a person who does rebuilds? How long should a good rebuild of the transmission last? Should I buy a rebuilt transmission instead of rebuilding my own transmission?

Thanks,

Robert

Robert; 100,000 mile warranty is nearly unheard of. Examine the "warranty" closely. If the trans takes a 'dump', do they pay the R & R labor?, and if so, how much? In the city where I live, there are only one or two "reputable" trans. shops..neither of which are "chains". For Chrysler products, you may want to check with your local Chrys/Ply/Dodge dealer. They have factory built remans. at a very reasonable price, but only 36/36000 warranty.
Usually, but not always, if it's too good to be true, it usually isn't. You may want to check with the BBB or ask friends about local shops. IMHO, I'd stay away from the "chain" franchises. In my town (250K), there is only one shop that I recommend. Family owned, in business for 30 years. Price; Remember, you get what you pay for.
I've been working on cars for over 35 yrs. and I wouldn't attempt an automatic trans. overhaul. Good luck.
