Another 31th tranny question

I just recently rebuilt a 31th 3 speed tranny for a dodge caravan 100,000+ miles I got it all back in the van and when I started it I shifted into reverse and it worked only it went forward. I then took off the linkage and kickdown cables and manually went though the gears in case I had the linkage messed up But it was the same thing. while going though the gears I noticed reverse, netraul and drive went forward 2nd and 1st did nothing. could this be the valve body. I am in school for automotive technologies and let someone else take apart the valve body and clean it. thinking they might of messed it up. Just looking for a second opinion ( I already learned to do it myself next time...LOL )
