I have 2001 Jeep Cherokee about 80,000 miles. Yesterday I was driving to work, when I stopped at the red light I turned on my A/C and my car died, the engine started back up with no problem. I drove the car home and when I exited the ramp and started to slow down my Jeep started to die (it felt like I was driving on the rough edges on the interstate - bumpy etc). I had my friend run his scan tool and it first came back as a TPS problem but 10mins later we ran it again and it came back as code 1762. A couple hours later I took it a repair shop and they ran there scanner on it and the guy said I have a tranny problem and need to replace my tranny. I drove the car to work today without any issues... Any help would be greatful!,

sounds like the shop doesn't know how to diag and repair the trans but only how to replace it. Did the shop say why you need a new trans? It sounds like the torque conv clutch is staying applied when coming to a stop causing the engine to stall. If you needed a new trans then you prob wouldn't have made it to work with no problems. Let me know the details of your jeep. engine size and trans type. Bob

I agree, there was a huge language barrier between us and I think the guys are full of Sh!t, they recommended for me to get a new tranny or a rebuilt one. Also I would like to add 2 days ago when the car died on my home I was able to pull into a shell gas station and I was able to start the car up with no problem but once I put it into drive it died again, so I waited 5mins and was able to get home. The next morning it did the samething when I started the car and put it into drive. Also I have been having issues with my RPM's, in the winter almost every morning when I got onto the freeway and tried to acc my rpms would stick around 3000rpm, I would cont to drive for about 10mins pull over and shut the engine and the rpm's would downshift? This spring I had a problem with my rpm's being to low when idle they were around 400 and should have been around 800-900 I bought some fuel injector cleaner and that seem to fix the problem. I'm going to my friends shop monday morning hopefully the two of us can figure this Sh!t out, he thinks I need a new tranny filter/flush etc.

Also my friend did a fuel pump pressure test and when the key switch was on we were only getting 10-12 and when the engine was on the reading was 45-55.

As far as the KOEO pressure, I would make sure to cycle the switch a couple of times & then take a reading & make sure the pressure holds.... (doesn't sound like a fuel issue to me though) I'm a little curious about the PCM throwing out different codes.... Any others besides the ones you mentioned? Almost sounds like the IAC isn't working at times....If I read you post right it was only dying coming to a stop, like maybe it was idling too low..... Usually when the tcc stays locked up it will die coming to a stop but then you won't be able to take off....... Definately need step back & take a look at everything.

The only code my friend got from his scanner was a problem with TPS then 10mins later we tested it again and it came back as 1762. When I took it to a different shop there scan tool gave a transmission/PCM code dont remember but I can find out. Yes so far it has only died coming to a stop. What is IAC? Like i mention above after adding fuel injector cleaner it made my rpms increase by 200 or soo but they are still 100-150 lower then they should be.

IAC is the Idle air control motor....It's how the comp controls the idle with no IAC base idle is around 400 rpms...... If your friends scanner can see a data stream you can monitor the idle speed, if it has bi-direction controls I believe the JTECs have a ATM function that will allow control of the IAC...... Also it wouldn't hurt to get some throttle body cleaner & clean the throttle body & the IAC motor

Thanks, I will check back in later today when I go for a drive. I really don't think i need a new transmission but we shall see monday morning.

I need a rebuilt transmission. My friend hook the scanner again and all the codes came back as transmission codes, we took the car out for a drive and it starts out in second gear so my take off power is very very low. He spoke with his friend at the jeep dealership and he recommended a speed sensor when we removed the sensor the tip had mental fillings all over it and the new sensor didn't make a difference. I am now waiting for the cost, we are thinking $500-1000 since his friend will build the transmission for me.

Yea it doesn't sound too good . It's alway good to cover the easy stuff 1st to make sure that's not the problem. Hope everything works out for you..........

I am leaning towards getting a junk yard transmission for about 355 and labor should be about 200-250 including new filter etc. I will cont to drive the car until fri nite.

You know the price your friend is giving you to overhaul your tranny is pretty good (I'm sure he knows what he's doing). Wrecking yard trannys are always a gamble & the good price you are getting for an overhaul really is that much more........ Something to think about........

The junk yard will come with a warranty and my guy will probably charge 600-700 bucks to rebuild. The reason why Im leaning towards the junk yard is that I dont plan on keeping the car for 5+ years. I think the tranny will solve most of my problems. 1: RPM sticking 2: Starting out in second gear 3: Everytime I go from park to reverse there is a loud noise coming from the tranny. Remember this is a 2001 Jeep with 80,000 miles.

Some metal is normal on the speed sensor as it is a magnut and attracts metal from the gears that are right above it. If the speed sensor was bad then your speedometer would have not been reading your speed or eratic. Trans codes usually indicate that you have electrical problems. You could burn out any clutch in the trans and be unable to drive without setting any codes in the computer. Those transmissions ( actually you havent said what trans you have as i requested) often fail at the governor sensor and solonoid ( wouldn't cause a stall ) . Sounds like your going to buy another trans without even knowing what model trans you have in your jeep. Start there Bob

I trust my friend esp when three other people tell me the samething, even if its the solonoid still would be cheaper to get a used trans because solonoids are usually $200 per. Go back and read the main problems I was having, they are all trans related.

Car is fixed, all my problems are solved. $375+100: used tranny+shipping $475: labor+parts (I had new front brake pads and rotors)
