2005 Chrylser Pacifica, 242,000 Kms, 3.5L
I have an 2005 Chrysler Pacifica, I frequently put it in autostick on the mountains to avoid using my brakes as often.
Well, I was climbing a hill and it had no power in the 4th gear. I slowed down and maintained speed and the rpm's wouldn't rev above 3,000 rpm's.
I pulled over at the nearest exit and changed it to automatic. In automatic I have no problems with power, it climbs hills no problem. RPM's jump as I put on the gas but only in auto.
Also, no check engine lights on.
What could this be???
Also high kms 242,000 kms

? Moved this to Transmission section such that site's Transmission Specialists can comment.
I have some questions and comments just not familiar with a Chrysler having this feature to me means you have the choice to drive this fully automatic or choose your own gear like a standard shift vehicle idea - am I correct?
IDK what the advantage of such a feature could be except as you said using engine as a brake for extreme downhill situations locking trans to behave as a standard could be useful in one time long downhill runs but I don't suggest doing that in general. The engine being turned by vehicle's weight isn't really all that good to your engine nor easy to control emissions or help much for fuel economy so just automatics don't hold a car back as much as ages ago - very long ago.
If this locks into 4th you said and couldn't climb a hill or gain rpm if this was a standard you'd downshift - why couldn't you? Why did you just switch it to automatic while driving rather you pulled over.
I'm unfamiliar with this in a vehicle like this but don't understand if it gives you total choice why you couldn't choose the next lower gear or if it doesn't allow that than there must be a problem as you really couldn't start from a stop if it's stuck in 4th gear very well or perhaps at all. That would make no sense at all or broken if you can't change it while you drive?

That's what I would think just an automatic without a clutch stays in the gear you choose was the last type I drove. I can be a mechanic but not know how each one operates. Can't believe you can't just shut it off while driving and be a plain automatic and let it do it's thing on the fly? He pulled over so don't get that part.
It just might be totally normal and owner just isn't using it properly - can't know. How severe is this hill and for how long? Says kilometers so guessing this area isn't in USA and didn't look. I've driven I-80 thru Eisenhower Tunnel and back to Denver grade for many miles is 6% max is a lot! Car would speed up doing nothing dangerously fast and using brakes too much so hot they can quit just fade or worse boil brake fluid they provide pull off areas.
Did that once because I was there. If a routine I'd be thinking about what vehicle or legal brake parts to use,

It's a fully electronic system that probably stays locked in once engaged. I have a car with it but never experimented with it.

Oh me oh my. I can see this is the kind of thing you simply get used to the way each works. If there are many around me at all I'm both surprised and unaware.
It's somewhat a traffic game for many so most really want plain automatics and forget playing with shifting anything.
OMG - VW bugs did this and had to drive one for something other than a problem and freaks you out. That long ago just your hand staying on the shifter was like pushing a clutch would drive almost anyone crazy! Tom

The VW was actually a manual transmission with a vacuum diaphragm operated clutch. This is a fully automatic trans with a gear selection override.

Exactly. I knew it was auto stick shift just pulling it in to a bay freaking had to be 40 years ago it jumped and jerked if you touched the shifter. When you already know how to drive either that was a trip. Even if I got used to that type it didn't seem very useful to me as either just a pest, Tom

Deb's Stratus R/T has that auto-stick. It does stay in whatever gear you chose. Been a long time since I drove it, (other than to put gas in it....once every two months, or so), but pretty sure it will drop down a gear by itself, if needed?
