Hi i had this problem for a while, i had my car at a mechanics shop and he became very uncooperative, i suspect he might have sabotaged my car. I had the car out at another mechanic and i picked it up shortly after, the repair was unrelated to the transmission or engine or anything. I had my car for a week until one day i noticed i couldnt get my car to shift into gear, like i press the knob forward and the car is moving very slightly forward, and i could do it with a lot of resistance initially. This progressed until i could only put it into gear by turning off engine and then shifting into first gear where shifting back to neutral was almost impossible. I had my car sent to mechanic and he found it to be lacking 3 liters of engine oil, 1 liter gear oil and 3.5 liter of coolant. Got it back again and it worked, i drove from his workshop about 70 kilometers and then i drove 10 kilometers a day for a few days- the problem came back again. On the second day i was trying to drive to work in the morning, it was again difficult to put my car into gear and i noticed that the clutch pedal didnt work at all while it was in first gear. I parked my car again and more than 10 hours later i had my car picked up. I pulled the clutch pedal backwards and that seemed to help the car function again where i could go into reverse and the clutch actually did something. It also seems to help the car to be standing without running for a long period of time. Now my car is back at the mechanic and he took a small test drive in it and looked into it and he didnt see anything wrong, maybe a tiny leak somewhere. I havent myself found any puddles of oil left behind. Any ideas if this could be a worn cable or excess oil or a leak- or something to check for? The car is MG ZT 190 (rover 75) 2.5 liter at 310k kilometers from 2001 It has manual gears I never had this issue before sending my car to the first mechanic, it appears he at least tapped some oil out of my car before passing it on, and he had the car for 3 days where i was trying to contact him nonstop and he wouldnt return my calls
