Chevy Blazer Transmission Woes...

Chevrolet Blazer
4 Door 4WD 4.3L
1995
67,000 mls

This vehicle will drive normally until warmed up and then the transmission slips and the engine revs, but goes nowhere fast!
If the engine is turned off, wait 30 seconds or so and restarted it will drive once again for a short distance.
In order to complete a journey this procedure has to be repeated time and time again.
I have been to a garage that specializes in transmission repairs, however their solution quite naturally is to rebuild the transmission at a cost of $1325 + tax.
Given the above, could I avoid the expense by just replacing the transmission fluid and potentially clogged filter?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

That would be just wishful thinking and in fact would probably make it much worse. The trans is slipping and the diagnosis sounds correct.

hocuspocus; Hammer is probably right, as usual. It would be a 'gamble' changing the filter, but with only 67K miles, might be worth a try?

Low miles or not some front pumps lose ability to maintain proper pressure resulting in band and clutch were resulting in wear they can't sustain much of if slipping. The suggestion of fixing source problem with an overhaul of wearing parts is in line if so.

Best you can do is prevent or lengthen life of an automatic trans and rarely can snake oil fix one dependably. It stands to reason that while cold even trans fluid is thicker and hence more pressure available to actuate its bands and clutches. If you need and like the vehicle I suggest getting the overhaul as already suggested. The bands and clutches generally don't tolerate much slipping before replacement is called for,

Sounds like the trans must be repaired rebuilt. The price that you were offered sounds good if it's firm and they will commit to it. You prob burn't all the clutches due to lack of fluid pressure / clogged filter. Good luck!
