Clutch Cable	Sign In

Was driving along in my 2003 pontiac Grand Am and the clutch started feeling...weird...loose. It was a little tough to shift gears Then, it went all the way to the floor

and I couldn't shift into any gear while the car was running. I did manage to start the car up in 3rd gear and drive home (15 miles!) like that. My husband says it's probably the clutch cable. Okay. Is it easy to fix? How do I fix it? Hubby's out of town and I don't wanna wait. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

This is early for that problem but it sounds like that's it. BE CAREFULL AS THIS CAR WILL PROBABLY START IN A GEAR AND TAKE OFF!! -- ESPECIALLY IF COLD. T

This vehicle does not use a clutch cable but a hydraulic mechanism to release the clutch.
This mechanism consists of a fluid reservoir, clutch master cylinder connecting lines and a slave cylinder.
One of a few things has likely happened; the hydraulic system has sprung a leak somewhere and there is not enough fluid for the system to work.
The master cylinder has possibly failed and cannot build pressure to actuate the slave cylinder.
Or the clutch itself has failed.
About the only think I can suggest you do on your own is to check the fluid level in the fluid reservoir. If it’s low try topping it up, the system uses brake fluid; DOT 3 is the fluid rating.
It’s also a small system; I think it only holds a few ounces and it is normal for the reservoir to look half full. So don’t top the reservoir to its brim.
This maybe enough for you to get the car to a repair facility to find out the cause of the fluid lose.
