Hi Gary, Let me begin with letting you know I rarely get involved with transmissions. I usually sub the work out.

I bought an 01 Grand Cherokee 2WD with a 4.7 that had been in a fresh water flood. When I got it, the trans had a lot of water in it and it had been driven. I flushed it with about 20 quarts of synthetic fluid and replaced both filters inside and the fluid is pretty clean now. At first I had no problem at all with it but after driving it a couple weeks it developed a delayed engagement into drive. Reverse is perfect though. Once engaged the transmission is perfect. It will smoke the tires in first gear and shifts completely normal in all other gears.

So far I have replaced the external pressure sensor with no change. A trans builder friend of mine advised me to do a "quick learn" with the scanner. I did and that seemed to actually make the problem worse. It never had any codes stored until recently, after changing the pressure sensor it had a line pressure code. I erased it without recording it so I could continue with the quick learn I was doing. I haven't checked for codes since.

I know everything is probably pointing to worn clutches but it just runs so good after engagement I can't help but think it is something electronic.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
HT

Hello Hammer,
Anytime water gets in the trans, it pretty much done, only a matter of time before something starts to happen. when water gets inside the trans, it melts the glue that holds the friction material to the disc. The solenoid pack will need to be replaced as well. Its possible you have a sticky solenoid from the water, if the engagement got worse can you hook your scanner back up and post the cvi's(clutch volume index) for the unit, i would like to see if they are in range.Gary

The CVIs were all under 100. The highest one was called I believe low/reverse was about 75. All the others were in the 40 to 60 range.

Sorry for the late reply, working 15 hour days at the least. All cvi's are within range and the l/r cvi is alittle low, the l/r cvi is 82 to 125. The thing with the 45rfe you cant do any pressure checks. If you have no codes possible sticky solenoid, but once water gets in there it may need to be overhauled. It upshifts ok?

No problem Gary. I appreciate the help.

Yes, outside of the delayed engagement, it is perfect. I can smoke the tires in first gear. It seems solid in every gear so I think the clutches are holding up.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I think this is actually a 545RFE. It has an underdrive solenoid.

Hi Gary, Do you still think I have a clutch problem or should I be looking at something else?

You may have a problem with the underdrive clutch, these are fed through small orffices that may be partly clogged, or possibly a sticky solenoid. All of your cvi's are within range. Also once water gets in the unit the seals swell up and may have a problem applying.

Thanks Gary, i might try changing the oil and filter one more time but after that I may just look for a low mileage used unit. The truck only has 94K on it.

UPDATE

Hi Gary, I wanted to let you know what has developed since talking to you last.

First I tried draining the oil and changing the return filter again but that changed nothing. A couple days later I was getting onto the Interstate and it started bucking and cutting out and the check engine light came on. My first thought was Crank sensor and I prayed I would make it home. I checked the code and it was P1721 (solenoid A). It happens that I was on my way to pick up a used valve body someone had that i was going to try. When I dropped the old valve body I found a big issue. Two of the pins in the main plug had rotted off and were stuck in the plug so I had high hopes I had found my issues but after changing the valve body all the solenoid issues were corrected but the delayed engagement was still there.

Since all the CVIs were exactly where they should be, I still have doubts this is a clutch problem so I'm just going to drive it for a while and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help.

Hammer,
You probably have an issue with a sealing ring, rubber lip seal or partly clogged orrfice in the input drum. Thanks for the info about the valvebody and solenoids. Gary
