Dodge Caravan 2005
85000 miles

Hello all,

I guess my google fu isn't cracked up for this so I apologize if someone finds a topic discussing this.

I have a Dodge Caravan that was purchased from a used dealer in Feb 2013. We inspected the vehicle before buying and saw no issues.

Recently, the van has begun acting weird after going into drive or reverse. It happens more with the reverse though.

I will put the van into reverse and back up 1-3 feet. The van will suddenly stop like it is in park. If I rev the gas just a little, it re-engages sometimes. Sometimes, it doesn't and I do not want to see how high the rpms have to get to re-engage it during these times, if they can. This applies to Drive as well but much more infrequently. Sometimes the issue doesn't happen at all. While driving, I hear a distinctive grinding/growling sound from the rear side of the van. It has just started doing this today.

Heres what I know so far -
o Transmission oil is not low
o Transmission oil is not burnt
o Bakes and rotors were inspected May and said they were good
o Van has driven 1000 mile trip to and from afterwards (June) No issues afterwards
o Van has driven a 800 mile to afterwards (August) No issues afterwards
o No damage appears on the undercarriage or around rear passenger tire assembly nor has it sustained any to my knowledge (falling off curb, bottoming out)
o Vehicle has had a fully dead battery once and took a full low trickle charge as the recharging method
o No issues actually shifting (hard, rattling, etc), just engaging afterwards

So any ideas my friends?

Hello,
The transmission in your car is called a 41TE, it sounds to me like your planetary gear set is on the way out, which would mean an overhaul in the near future. The fact that this backs-up then stops moving is because the trans is binding up(that would feel like your putting the brakes on). Question, you had said you hear a grinding noise coming from the van, by chance does that noise go away when the van shifts into 2nd or 3rd? Gary

You known Gary I was thinking about this. If this van is AWD, could that make the grinding noises in the rear and possible lock up from a PTO or differential coming apart?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I want to say it was still grinding in 2nd gear because I drove around the block at about 25mph and I think it was still grinding. I say think just because I may be second guessing myself.

I would love to double check but wait for it........the stopping and binding are not happening at all. The new area we currently live in had it's first freeze yesterday (between 30 and 40 all day and the previous night) and that was when the van was doing the stopping/grinding. Now that it's warmed up today, I can't make the van do any of the stopping or grinding now. It's like nothing is wrong with anything.

Hello,
This is starting to sound maybe like a brake problem, when you were having this issue, did you have the brakes looked?

duespo: Need some info on what engine, drivetrain and brake type you have as there shows four engines, AWD or not and plain drum rear brakes and disc rear with drum parking brake hidden inside rear that wouldn't be checked in a "just a glance" brake check by most and can be all you noise and strange stopping if broken inside.

I suggest as "gsferraro" just did ask if brakes were checked again. If disc in rear you really need to ask for them to be taken apart for a full inspection and great time to clean out the small drum, hardware for that as it's not a service brake that gets used when moving so can collect junk, rust unseen or who knows till looked right at and I would do that on a routine for that type anyway so you don't get caught by surprise being stuck because of a parking brake problem.

Note: 30-40F temps to me are not quite cold enough for strange cold noises much below that, that would go away shortly when driving and gone when warmed up vehicle not air temps.

If destined for or a newbie at cold you'll get used to it. Off this topic is don't use power windows or wipers if iced in as that breaks things and you can avoid that,

I will be getting the brakes looked at again. Personally, that is what it feels like when it happens. It feels like the passenger rear wheel is braking.

Engine is 3.3L, V6
Drivetrain is FWD.
Brakes are Rear Disc

OK - you have to do that to rule it out if nothing else. That little drum inside could have broken hardware/dirt/rust and lock or drag on a wheel unseen and quit it so only looking at them is going to help now,
