Explorer trans jumps out of drive Sign In

1999 Explorer 4.0L DOHC with 135,000 miles

When cold, transmission sometimes hangs in Neutral when going from Reverse to Drive. Then later when accelerating from a stop sign, the tranny jumped from D to N. Occurred several times then was OK for the rest of the day.

Do you recommend a rebuild or off-the-shelf exchange with a new converter?

Re:99 Explorer 4.0 trans jumps out of drive Sign In

Before you just up and replace everything need to know some stuff on this:

*Is the shifter moving from D to N on it's own? Do you make a habit of that at stop signs and lights?

* How cold is cold to you? I have way too many cars of my own and can't keep them all stored/garaged with moderated temps. When we get a windy and especially cold (single digit to below zero F temps) they can be sluggish to engage. I rarely take off till engine is warmed up some if the situation as frequently there's frost, snow or ice to clear before you can head out anyway. I know that is wasting gas but vs an accident it's worth it.

A lot might be solved by servicing trans using synthetic trans fluid if just sticky or too thick when cold it helps.

* If you have been good to this trans and trust you can get competent trans work done I'd keep the one you have vs some unknown off the shelf. Of course it's faster to swap it out but I worry about history of an unknown one even though it could have been carefully re-done you really don't know until it's installed exactly how well it will behave IMO,
