Explorer transmission problem Sign In

2004 Ford Explorer 4.0 liter 4WD 98000 miles
Hello. I recently bought a 2004 Ford Explorer 4WD Eddie Bauer model. Two problems. The PCM won't communicate through the port for the machines to check codes. The radio doesnt work and seems like possible electrical problems.

Even bigger though is the transmission needs replaced.

The people I bought it from said they would pay for half of the transmission or they would buy it back.

Is it worth it too replace the transmission and pay for half of it or will there just be more problems down the road and should I just sell it back and lose the 500 bucks on taxes, titles, ext.?

Do you have papers that they will buy it back? Seller sure seemed to know what they were getting rid of and you should have checked it out before any transaction IMO.

Your money but I'd cut my losses and sell it back,

I think the decision should be based on the condition of the rest of the vehicle. If you have a clean, strong truck with only a transmission problem, having a reman trans for half price is a pretty good deal but on the other hand, if this is only the beginning of what's to come, cut you losses now.

I smell a fish! OK - I'll get the trans rebuilt for $30,000 bucks, they pay half and you are all set right? I'm kidding of course but you don't know for sure how much what will cost quite yet. Seems right now you don't know if that one is even a core to rebuild or need another to redo.

If you got one heck of a deal on the thing in decent shape otherwise you might have a keeper and deal. Things happen to any car and newly acquired + used is no exception,

Check for power on pin 16 of the DLC (data link connector). If you don't have power, check fuse f24 15 amp in the central junction box (fuse box inside the cab).
