I've got a 2013 Focus SE with I believe a 6 speed dual clutch "automatic" transmission. Not long ago I had the clutch pack changed in it per Ford's recommendation. Started having shifting issues a little while later, got a "TCM fault" message on dash. They found no codes, I had them replace the TCM to be safe. Didn't help, now the car is basically undrivable. Getting hung on the lower gears, no power, neutralizing out and won't go at all, getting a "pull over safely, transmission overheating" message. Ford says again, no codes. Claim the fluid is fine. They can't find the problem, said the whole trans needs to go and a new wiring harness too. They won't cover it, I'm tired of dealing with them so I'm going elsewhere.

Before I have the trans swapped, what is the possibility that a wiring harness could be the problem? Or possibly a problem with the grounding wire on my battery? Could that cause the problems I am describing? I just want to be sure nothing obvious has been overlooked before I drop a ton of money on another trans.

Another question I have is, does anyone know where the TCM is located on this car? If I replace the trans I want the new TCM to stay, obviously.

Have you addressed this with ford*? I believe there is an extended warranty on this trans to @5years or 100K ?
Not sure if applicable but you should ask Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02
* there is an 800 phone # in owners manual for unresolved issues with dealer...

Yes, Ford has been most unhelpful in this ordeal. Not only is the warranty voided on the car, but their techs have been unable to actually come up with any concrete explanations for what's wrong other than "replace everything". So unfortunately, this problem is my problem.

However, there have been some recent developments that I find quite interesting in this ordeal. I'm hoping that what I'm about to explain could shed some light on my problem to anyone with the experience to recognize what exactly is going on.

My trans performance problems began a few weeks ago, and it rapidly deteriorated, seemly worse every time the car was driven until the car became basically undrivable. I was considering replacing the trans, when today I went to start my car only to find there was no crank. Original 3 year old Motorcraft battery couldn't even crank, which was shocking to me. Had the car jumped and it started up, but driving it wouldn't shift out of first gear at all - the worst it's ever been. Tested the battery, it was somewhat low, so we charged it up near full capacity. Miraculously, the car is back to performing the way it was when I first started having problems.... not perfect, something still amiss, but cycling through all the gears and producing power. I was blown away that the battery charge could partially rejuvenate my transmission.

The problem that it's still having is two things primarily, when it's ready to shift into the next gear, it will seem to "miss" the gear, or backtrack to the previous one for a brief moment, causing the car to rev up a bit, then it will shift again into the correct gear. Still, it's also telling me within five minutes of driving the car "pull over safely, transmission overheating" and then "please wait 5 minutes". I don't know if the warning is legitimate or not, but just in case, I always pull over.

This has got me wondering if my transmission woes are purely electrical? I'm also a bit furious how the lackeys at Ford could overlook my battery issue. Did they even test the vehicle to see if the power current was making it's way to and from the components? Did they even check to see how my battery was? Evidently not. What I'm almost certain of is that my battery is being drained of power somehow, and that could very well be related to the issue that I'm having with my trans performance. As the battery gets weaker, the performance deteriorates. Eventually the battery will loose so much power, that the car won't crank.

To me it's just another small piece of this puzzle. Is my alternator bad? Do I have a grounding issue? Is my wiring to the trans bad? Is it even getting the correct amperage? Just what the heck is draining my battery?

If anyone has a hunch, please let my know what you think. I can't trust Ford anymore. I feel like they've wasted my time and money, and their techs barely know anything besides clutch packs. I strongly feel that the clutch pack (which is relatively new) is just fine. My new trans control module on it is also fine. My issue is a bit less common than something like that. Any insights appreciated!

So you just said Ford declared any warranty or responsibility "voided" - by what? Have you passed the 5 yr. 100,000 mile marks? Could be you took delivery in 2012 or another reason it's not covered anymore? Accidents, commercial use or perhaps over on the miles OR just blowing you off as they don't want to deal with this.
Who are these "Ford" techs? Sent from Ford for you or from a dealership? They can't figure anything out other than say "replace everything?"
Sorry - not being too mechanical yet I want to know how old this car and now battery really are. Look at driver's door jam should tell what month and year it was made. Battery if believed original is older than that date and marked in the plastic of it when and where it was made. It's very possible it's passed its useful life all by itself older than you think no matter how it may test for a moment they do just get old and are perishable about like a head of lettuce almost exactly.
That in turn can cause other problems.
My point is why you are getting blown off by now all these folks? If in fact it really is all yours and you are convinced it very well could be a total redo or an upgraded version.
In that case you can go anywhere you wish for better info, what to do that will work out best and pay for it.
Back to battery: If that old it's done and needs to be replaced just because now as it's totally possible it alone is screwing up any clear electrical problems and the diagnosis other than plain wear out,

Something is not kosher. something is not clear to me.
Did you use the 800 customer no# I referenced ?
The dealership and their technicians are NOT the same as FORD motor co - a little more involved than semantics they are 2 different and distinct things.
Did you buy this vehicle NEW ?
Why and how did they cancel warranty - in writing? If so I see an attorney in your future...

If I was to make a wild guess about why his warranty was voided it would be because he has been messing with it himself.

IDK how fast we'll get an answer to that but OP seems AWOL for now. If still watching and you did mess with it or other than approved FORD service or repairs to maintain a warranty you do void it out. They aren't going to waste time if you messed with it or another concern totally.

You said it but haven't been back. If so on any of this you do in fact OWN this problem now,

No, I didn't buy it new and no, I didn't buy it from them or any dealer. This Ford dealer I went to claims that warranty is void because of the car history saying the title was once branded in their system, even though they don't know why. After saying they'd at least warrant the parts I bought from them, they backpedaled and said even that isn't covered once they realized they couldn't find the actual problem. Believe me, I understand the fascination about this not being covered under warranty, but I don't really care at this point and that's not the advice I was seeking. I'm not interested in pursuing a lawsuit, they can go you know where and I'm cutting my losses with them. All that I want is my car running correctly again, and those know-nothings at the dealership are gonna waste my time and money.

I'm searching for pointers on a technical perspective now. I'm interested in fixing this, or finding someone savvy enough to pinpoint the issues I'm having. Unfortunately, I need to have this conversation every time I come onto the web searching for answers because all anyone knows at this point is to shrug and say it should be a dealer's problem. Well, eventually like all cars these are gonna be worked on at home by regular folks, or independent garages. Eventually people will need to know about their issues and how to fix em'. So, that's why I'm here trying to relay technical issues and find possible explanations for why they're occurring. For myself, and as reference for others who need to the fix their car - and when I do find the answer, I will post it for reference of anyone else having the problem. Knowledge is power.

I was under the impression someone might offer technical advice on transmission issues, possibly diagnosis based on what the unit is doing, or at least some anecdotal pointers or comparison of notes. Just some general ideas - "you might try - or you might check". I know no one has the actual fix here, but I thought with the way my battery issue has panned out someone would have a clue of what could be going on with it. Searching around the web I've found others saying with different vehicles their trans went into full-on safe mode because of a battery being bad. Could possibly be just a bad battery, don't know yet, haven't swapped it.

It's all guesswork, but I think I'm on the right path, as where the dealership was sending me down a very wrong path. I'll probably drop it by an independent shop and see what they think, but if the issue is super simple, like a battery problem, I can do that myself.

OK - Finally know. If FORD has and they do cancelled any responsibility and they do for salvage vehicles, commercial sometimes or other reasons then let's move on.

You probably do need a new battery just anyway so begin there as already said.

I'm not the site's trans specialist but apparently needs just that now and you are free to forget Ford and deal with a transmission shop.

My personal problem with vehicles this new is for decades in biz wouldn't touch a vehicle with warranty restrictions that only back to a real dealer would do or wreck it for YOU! By that it means I and others here don't see the first of new cars till it's all over and most vehicles make if off warranty before needing much more than oil changes and listed maintenance then others get the problems of this sort - a driveline problem in this case apparently transmission.

Feel the confusion on my/our part if you don't make it clear. Site is here to help but not there in person is always a disadvantage and you've had this with techs in person and they are confused so I don't have a magic crystal ball for you.

I did suggest and am again make sure battery is newer than it probably is. Most are at risk by 4 years or so and totally important to so much it's got to go and be known right first or you'll just mess up all other possible electrically monitored or controlled items which is most of cars today.

With this I don't think a website forum is your end all answer vs a pro shop that deals with transmissions all the time and can look and test that particular one not what is now known off the list for Ford as a company for much help it still exists from independent shops and suggest you find one,

I think you asked where is TCM, bolted on transmission the wiring harness should help ID the component.
Ford is struggling to correct the deficiencies in this transmission, I will expect there software will be changed yet again, so called reflashed.
Maybe correct all those other issues you have concern with as a stacked tolerance problem could compound the issue.
word of advice - keep it stock add no electrical devices even seemingly unrelated add on are problematic.

If you get a multimeter and test the battery while the car is running wether it is a 12 or 14 volt alternator you should get a reading no more than 1 and a half 2 volts absolutely maximum over or under. If goes under it will be the alternator voltage regulator which would explain the overheating and if it goes over it would be the alternator (diode)rectifier.
