Gear shift problem

I had to hit the brakes hard due to a tree limb in the road. I was going maybe 50 mph. I was able to get it slowed enough to go around the limb--no one was coming the other direction. Now I can't get it into 2nd gear except by pulling very hard, and then it's even harder to get out of 2nd gear. I got under it to see if there maybe was a tree branch in the linkage, but it was clear of debris.

Question, with the engine OFF is it still hard to select 2nd or does it go right in? Gary

It's still hard to get into 2nd with the engine off.

If its hard to go into 2nd with the engine off, you have something wrong inside or with possibly your linkage. Gary

? Just a thought as it seems this was a real surprise to avoid a fallen tree limb no two situation would be the same. Marinemammal - you said you looked for evidence UNDER the car. I suggest looking under hood as well, check if clutch master is at proper fluid level and with a helper just watch the clutch parts move as much as you can any which way.
Quick check shows clutch's master cylinder is on it's own and doesn't share fluid with brake master cylinder on this and should look like this..........
General for these types is to use a flexible rubber hose in line on the way to clutch slave cylinder which possibly could bust with debris, fluid would be low or gone and if wet evidence not easy to find and don't test this on a vehicle but would drive like you weren't pushing the clutch at all. Worth another look and suggest not forcing this thing as no clue what possible damage might have left little evidence if so at all?

This model does not have a hydraulic clutch--just linkage and cable. I did watch the clutch fork move when a helper pushed the pedal down. It seemed to be moving fine. On my regular rounds I come to a hill which is too steep to climb without dropping down to 2nd. That's the only time I use it since going from 1st to 3rd works. I could go over the hill in 1st if you really are concerned. It does NOT grind into 2nd, but it takes a good pull and also it's hard to get out when going to third. My plan it to remove the console and see if something got lodged in a position that would make it difficult to shift into 2nd.
The cause seems to be directly related to the hard braking. It was shifting fine before that and not going into 2nd right after. None of the other gears seem to be affected. It shifts fine from 1st to 3rd to 4th to 5th and revers too. Downshifting works fine too.

It was just a thought as to why all at once like that. There is a hydraulic one listed, might have chosen wrong something but doesn't matter. Road debris is too common for some reason to me mostly tires or bit of them but trees too.
Gary is the total expert on this - I was just wondering what non common thing could happen or break that you might see and I can't see the connection on using brakes hard with this? Lost and worse only ever knew of ONE std shift Subaru anything or any make not very popular where I am,

Gary already ruled that out when he asked if it shifted OK with the engine off.

I took the console out to view the linkage. There was nothing obviously wrong there. I disconnected the shift lever from the rest of the linkage to see if manually moving through the gears with only the linkage would be different. It wasn't. It does seem to be getting easier to get into 2nd gear, but no easier taking it out. I have been driving the car daily, but mostly skipping 2nd gear.
I got under the car while my helper shifted through the gears. Nothing looked abnormal.
There is a sharp clicking sound when pushing forward with the shift lever and moving it back and forth in neutral that I don't think was there before.

Your going to need to remove the transmission and split it open. Something went wrong inside that you will be able to visually see. Could be a shift fork or rail issue. Also inspect second gear syncros, second main and counter shaft gears. Factory second gear doesn't hold up too well if your racing and slamming gears in those.
