I can't remember exactly where the problem is when the vehicle makes grinding noises when it shifts gears. Along with that it "jerks" when it finally shifts to the next gear.

I would also appreciate price ranges for fixing the problem.

That all depends on what the exact problem is. Prices for transmissions vary by engine, vehicle, model year and what area of the country you are in. It may not need a transmission, and it would take a knowledgeable person to see the car to know if that is the case. I'd pay for a diagnostic at a local transmission shop and see what they say. If its a replacement they call for call around to several to see what kind of prices they would charge for the same work. But remember that if you get someone substantially lower than the other guys beware. The cheapest in the short term isn't the cheapest in the long term. Quality does cost money but you will get what you pay for.
