Hello, Our Chrysler Town and Country('98?) has been making a growling noise up in the front, the noise seems to change(quieter/louder/no noise) sometimes like if we turn the steering wheel, but I'm not sure what this noise is from. Could this be the trans? BTW:The minivan has over 160k miles.

I have the same problem and found this. Thought you migh want to try it. I am go int to tomorrow! Anyone have a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country van, or 2002 ish Dodge Grand Caravan ? Let me help you AVOID a headache at the dealer. Mine developed a harsh growl in the power steering-just at low speeds, stop lights, at parking lot speeds. Growl, growl, vibrate. I brought it to the dealer, and they said there was a "service bulletin" on it. That means they know about it, but are not going to pay for it. OK fine. They said the fix is "probably" or "mostly" a longer hose. (hmm, that would fix a lot of things). Anyway, they smacked me over a hundred clams to replace one hose, and the noise and shudder is still there. They said the next thing to "try" is to replace the pump, the rack, the nut behind the wheel. WOW. They sound like doctors, "practicing" auto repair. I felt honored that my van was apparently the first one they ever saw like this. Yeah, right. I went to the Google, and found out that hundreds of people have been dealt the same deception, first they sell you a hose, then a pump, then a rack, then a new nut behind the wheel. Eventually freeing you from about $1,700.oo hard earned bucks. The fix? A $30.00 power steering resevoir plastic jug. Turns out a filter of fine mesh is molded into the center of the jug, and can't be cleaned, you just replace the whole jug, the fluid can race through the veins of the steering system again, no more growl. I went to the dealer parts counter, and purchased a new power steering fluid jug for $30 bucks. They even throw in the cap. I even bought MOPAR fluid like the GOOGLE tip told me to. Went home, removed and replaced the jug, filled the fluid up, and NO MORE GROWL RATTLE HUMM. Less than an hour, even with cleanup. The real funny-- ? when I went to the parts counter and requested the jug, the parts guy TOLD ME, "So, you got noisy power steering huh?", oh yeah, we sell lots of them for that... Uhh, how long before the trained mechanic got around to selling me one ? Anyway, I hope I can help someone else avoid this problem. Send me a PM if you need to change the steering resevoir, or Google it and you will find step-by step instructions. It's messy, but only three bolts, two hoses to remove, not bad at all. I may apply at my nearby Chrysler garage, as a MECHANIC.
