HELP! 2007 chevy silverado randomly engage 4x4 while driving	Sign In

Chevrolet
1500 silverado classic
5.3 liter
160000 miles
While driving down the road the 4wd indicator will suddenly come on, a second later you hear a pop then a grinding noise like it's engaging 4x4 while moving. Have to completely stop and you'll hear another pop and you can drive again, but it never engages but the indicator stays on until key cycle. Been randomly doing this for couple months nobody can tell me anything.
It's not electric button either, it has the manual lever in the floorboard. So please let me know if anybody has heard of this and know what to do

Do you know the model of transfer case this has? There should be a label on the transfer case itself with the model number.

Might need to have someone with a high end scan tool monitor the PCM data pid for the axle switch signal. If you can't do that, you may need to make some checks with a volt meter to monitor the transfer case control switch signal and the front actuator voltages. Could be a faulty transfer case control switch or actuator issue causing the actuator to front end to lock up with driving.

Hello,
No button, do you have an AWD and not 4x4, what can you select 4high and 4low? First thing to look at is tire size, are all 4 tires the same model and size? Tire size is very critical on awd and 4x4 cars, if a wrong size tire is on the car, the computer interprets this as a slip and would apply the transfer case. I have a special tool in my shop to measure tire size called a stagger gauge. Gary
