Help with 4WD Sign In

I recently bought a 2001 Chevy blazer with 2WD/4WD it has a 4.3 Vortec engine and it has 132,000 miles. I leave it in 2WD all the time but when I start off it feels like its in 4WD and then a few mins later it's like 2WD again. But if I park it and put it back in drive then it does the same thing. What does that mean?

Re: Help with 4WD Sign In

i have no ideas the other veterans here might but this is a drivability issue and is something best for a technician that can go for a drive with you or test drive and see for themselves exactly what your talking about.

Re: Help with 4WD Sign In

I dont know it's like it starts off really sluggish and then it's like it just wakes up and realizes its in 2WD. I guess I'll have to take it to a shop as much as I hate to. Thanks for the response!

Re: Help with 4WD Sign In

Another question: If you put it into four wheel drive and take off, does it duplicate your symptoms?

Since you probably don't have a scan tool that can get into the transfer case control module to look at the encoder motor position, you could unplug the encoder motor down on the transfer case after making sure the transfer case is selected for 2WD. If for some odd reason its going into 4 wheel drive on it's own, it can't do that when the encoder motor connector is unplugged.

If the problem is still there with the encoder unplugged, more than likely the 4wd isn't causing your symptoms and you need to look elsewhere.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: Help with 4WD Sign In

It sounds like the trans may be starting off in second gear. When you start off in drive and it feels sluggish, try pulling the shifter down into low, forcing the trans into first gear.. If that works you may have a sticky governor in the trans.
