Hundai transmission problem Sign In

The trnamission in my Hundai Excel is not shifting into higher gears. This only happens in warm weather. There were no problems all winter. The same thing happened last year.. Any help?

I'll try here: Transmission upshift is based on engine load, RPM and throttle position. Any misiformation to your transmission can cause a problem.

Things to check:

Color of trans fluid -- should be clean and redish.

Look for any vacuum leaks which can fool the system.

If you don't find anything you may need some pro help. A good honest shop should be able to help you and I will add that so far this does NOT indicate an overhaul. T

The fluid is reddish. How do I check for a vacuum leak? I do notice that the fluid level is above the hot indicator, even when its cold.

If the fluid is close it should be ok. If way too full it might be a problem and you may want to have some taken out.

VACUUM LEAKS: Check for cracked elbows and they may be unplugged and many go to plastic line that looks like wire that can break and can be fixed with plain rubber hose if found. The important vacuum lines will go to the intake manifold or and electric switch/sensor that converts manifold vacuum to electrical information which tells the transmission how much load is on the engine. A fault or leak could tell the transmission you need lower gears for power. T

Why are there two hoses from the radiator to the trans?

Re: Hundai transmission problem Sign In

The lines almost all go right to an end tank of the radiator. Some vehicles use a whole separate cooler but mostly trucks. It's possible that some (haven't noticed this yet) may have done away with that system. Never paid to much attention unless I was removing a radiator or one leaked, T

So is the trans is cooled by water from the radiator?

Yes. Many do it that way or as said a separate cooler and it must be important because I don't think the car makers would spend a dime that didn't prove necessary. They are available for many vehicles as aftermarket air cooled for even more help. T

Does that mean that the radiator thermostat could have something to do with the trans getting too hot to work? How about too little water in the radaitor?

Re: Hundai transmission problem Sign In

What confuses me with this problem is you said it only does this in warm weather?? If the engine is full of coolant and not overheating that alone rules out that. Cooling trans fluid I believe is to make them last longer but I've never known one to shift improperly from fluid temp alone which would go up with an engine overheat.

If you have a gauge you should see this. Gauge should stay pretty steady once warmed up. If not the causes are usually fans that don't work, radiator inadequate, and possibly the thermostat but the first two are more likely. Certainly check that coolant is properly full. T

Re: Hundai transmission problem Sign In

Maybe I didn't describe the problem correctly. The trans sounds like its slipping.. The first shift from 1 st to 2 nd seems to go smoothly but at about 22 mph and 2000 rpm the car won't accelerate any more with the rpm increasing but the speedometer at about 22. I can rev the engine but the speed stays at 20 mph.

Couldn't the engine be in normal temp range but the trans down there somehow too hot to function properly?
