Idle issues Sign In

I have a 1996 Mazada Protege ES with a 2.0 engin and 102,000 miles. It runs great. When the engin is in netural it idles smooth. When I put it in drive it idles rough. But it runs fine. The transmission fluid looks good. What could this be.

This could be anything from tune-up parts failing, a vacuum leak, air/fuel mixture, fuel pressure, etc. Can you give a little more info please so we may narrow this down?

Like Steve said there really isn't a whole lot of info here.

One thing that did pop into mind especially with the mileage is you may be looking at a motor mount problem transfering engine vibration. A quick check you could do would be get a floor jack with a piece of wood and jack up the engine slightly from the oil pan and see if the vibration disappears (you want to get the weigh off the engine but not to the point where you start picking up the car). If it smoothes out you're looking at mount problem.....

Steve, the car idles rough when sitting at a stop light, but when I take off it's smooth again. And as I said in my first post it idles fine in netural.

Sidom has a good point about the motor mounts. I say check that and then back to basics: fuel pressure, spark on all cylinders, injector pulse on all cylinders, vacuum guage readings. You may want to start out by checking the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and filters. Mazdas are notorious for cracked caps and wires leaking voltage to ground. May I suggest spraying the wires with a spray bottle of water with the engine idling. If the wires are bad, the engine should sputter and not want to rev up without popping.

I'm not sure how you plan on check the motor mounts but here's a good way.

Have the engine idling in gear with someone sitting in the car. Get a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan. Slowly apply lift to the oil pan to take the engine weight off the mounts. If the vibration goes away when doing that, the mounts are the problem.
