Jerky gear shifting Sign In

2006 Pontiac G6 115k miles. I park on a hill in front of my house and apparently if I don't set the e brake first before I go into park, then that screws up my shifting. So now whenever I first start my car and shift from park it's very jerky and not a smooth transition at all. Often a loud noise involved. And while driving the auto trans shifting through gears is still jerking. But after a while it goes away and is smooth as butter. Also this only happens when I start my car from the hill, never on a smooth surface.

My questions are;
1. What needs to be replaced?
2. How much does it cost?
3. If I start parking on the flat driveway, do I even need to get this fixed?
4. If I continue to park on the hill and do nothing about this, what will happen?

What? If this is fine without parking on this hill about now sounding like a cliff it sounds like your are really forcing it OUT of park is bending up linkages or who knows so what to do or costs unknown.

Fondly we call the "parking brake" an e-brake is really meant to be used ALL the time just to take the load of sitting still not the drivetrain.

If you ever have a choice choose level parking or close to it as possible,

It has always been the the recommended procedure to apply the parking brake before putting it in park when on a hill. Also shift out of park before removing the parking brake when on a hill.

This will protect your transmission.
