Mazda 6 Code PO753

I own a 2003 Mazda6i 4 speed automatic transmission 2.3 liter engine. 160,000 miles on tranny. Recently heard a thump at 40 miles per hour and then it set a code po753 and AT on dashboard,and check engine light went on. It went into limp mode. It shifts perfectly from 1 to 2 to 3 but will not go into 4th gear at 40 mph.The fluid is not red but slightly tan- to brown. I reset the computer by removing the negative battery cable. It ran 109 miles by shifting into all 4 gears. It sat over the weekend and boom monday am the problem came back. Same code po753 listed twice in the code reader. Resetting the computer did not solve it this time. My questions is should I change the Solenoid A & B or is this transmission finished. In limp mode it shifts normal from 1,2,3 but no 4th. and no slipping.Frown And by the way, this is a great forum compared to some oft the other ones that I posted this question.

Hello,
This code is an electrical code for shift solenoid A, what is a common problem with this solenoid is a poor internal ground strap connection, because of the ground problem, shift solenoid A cannot stroke the 3-4 shift valve resulting in no 4th. As long as the fluid looks ok and doesnt small burnt, i would change the solenoids and see what happens, its a very common problem. Gary

The way the solenoid works is, when the solenoid is "off" you will have 12 volts on the control wire, when the computer commands the solenoid "on" you will have zero volts on the control wire, if the computer sees anything other than that it will set the code for solenoid A.

Thank You for your answer. I have spent a week trying to get just an opinion or answer from the mazda automotive forum.


I will update this thread as soon as I replace the 2 solenoids.

One more question.
I received the shift solenoid and plan on changing the A & B
filter and oil. Before cracking the tranny pan should I disconnect the negative battery cable? Or should I erase the codes with my scanner code reader after replacing the solenoids and leave the battery connected.

You can leave the battery connected, just clear the codes before or after you install the solenoids. Gary

Replaced solenoid a & b filter fluid and gasket. Still no 4th gear. The fluid was slightly black and a small amount of creamy gunk was on the magnet but no metal chips. The car shifts from first to second and third and boom the AT light after third gear, and check engine light and no fourth gear. What is really puzzling to me is that there are no shifting or slipping issues. I know its hard to diagnose by posting on the internet but just out of curiosity what else can it be? A bad clutch band, broken gear, clogged valve body. Scanned it and same codes PO753. Because of the age of the car, I don't plan on installing a rebuilt tranny but if this is still electrical where do I go from here?
Also for those wanting to change the filter and fluid, the job is quite simple, 20 bolts off and everything comes down. I was fortunate to have a drain plug on the tranny pan, so I didn't make a mess.

Hello,
Is the 753 code the only code present? What might have to be done next is to put a volt meter on the command wire and see what the voltage is doing. The p0753 is an eletrical code. Gary

The next step would be to check the control wire, i have access to wiring diagrams to help you. are you familiar with how to do this, yu would need a volt meter, basically the volt meter would need to read 12 volts in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and zero volts in 4th gear.

Ok, First the TCM is located left side of dash, looks like maybe above the break pedal. At the tcm its terminal 1A(right at the end) the wire color is Light green and red. If it helps to id the wire it is right next to an orange wire(terminal 2a).
However it may be easier to back probe the wire at the transmission(you may have more room to work)connector. It is still the LIGHT GrEEN and red wire. If you choose to back probe at the trans becareful because there is a green and red wire and yours is light green with the red tracer. Back probe the wire put your negative meter to a good known ground. Make sure you have 12 volts or battery volts when in 1,2,3 gears and the voltage should go away when a shift to 4th is commanded.
With the car running in park you may show zero volts on solenoid a(may or may not, not really sure, on fords that use this trans there is 0 volts).
The key here is to see what happens when a shift to 4th is commanded. Gary
