Nissan Xterra 4X4 CV Joint question Sign In

Hey,

I have a 2010 Nissan Xterra 4X4 with an occasional grinding noise when turning to the left. It seems to be most noticeable when making a hard left turn at approximately 20 mph and seems to come front the front left wheel. I doubt it is a wheel bearing since my wheels seem to have no wiggle and it is a pretty ugly sound for a wheel bearing. My first thought was that it sounds like a CV joint issue, but I am a bit confused.

This is my first 4X4 vehicle that is primarily rear wheel drive. My somewhat basic understanding of the drivetrain leads me to believe that the CV joint would not be engaged in the front unless the 4X4 is on. Since the sound is occurring when operating in rear wheel drive I am clearly misunderstanding something.

Could the front CV joint be making noise even when operating in rear wheel only? I'd not, any other thoughts on what to check is appreciated!

Sounds and noises like this can travel from one side to the other just know that.
I say by your observations and description it's a wheel bearing not CV joint is common on turns that shift load of the weight of the vehicle. CV joints make noise when turning sharper with some load like accelerating more likely first.
Exceptions to either but those are most common to me. Neither make funny driving behavior or loose when checked early on and by the time they do it's a wild emergency,
