O/D light keeps blinking

i have a 1999 ford crown victoria it has 188k miles on it and today while i was driving it my o/d (over drive light) just came on and started blinking. and the car isn't shifting like it normally do. i tried pushing the button and it wont turn off. Whats going on? and what do i need to do to fix? i hope my transmisison isn't going out

The flashing light means there is a problem in the transmission. You can have the codes read at a major parts house. Post the codes here and we can lead you to the problem. The codes will be something like a P07XX. The X's will be more numbers. Do not post what the parts guy tells you. Get the exact code number and post it back here.
